Summary

Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain 2016-2018 Acura MDX, 2015-2019 Acura TLX and 2015-2017 Honda Accord vehicles, equipped with a 3.5L V6 engine. Particulates in fuel may adhere to the internal components of the fuel pump, reducing its performance.

 

Remedy

Honda will notify owners, and dealers will update the fuel injection engine control unit (FI-ECU) software and, if necessary, replace the fuel pump, free of charge. The recall began March 25, 2019. Owners may contact customer service at 1-888-234-2138. Acura’s recall number for this recall is P3W. Honda’s recall number for this recall is N3X.

This bulletin has been extensively revised. American Honda recommends that you thoroughly read this entire bulletin.

 

BACKGROUND

Under certain driving conditions using fuel with high sodium content and with other ambient conditions present, the fuel pump may fail to provide enough fuel to the engine, leading to a stall.

 

CUSTOMER NOTIFICATION

Owners of affected vehicles will be sent a notification of this campaign.

Do an iN VIN status inquiry to make sure the vehicle is shown as eligible.

Some vehicles affected by this campaign may be in your used vehicle inventory.

Failure to repair a vehicle subject to a recall or campaign may subject your dealership to claims or lawsuits from the customer or anyone else harmed as a result of such failure. To see if a vehicle in inventory is affected by this safety recall, do a VIN status inquiry before selling it.

 

CORRECTIVE ACTION

Update the PGM-FI software. Only customers that specifically reported a stall condition, verified with the on-board snapshot, will qualify for the in-tank fuel pump replacement.

INSPECTION

If the customer does not have a complaint of an engine stall, do REPAIR PROCEDURE A – PGM-FI UPDATE. For vehicles in your dealership’s new and used vehicle inventory, do REPAIR PROCEDURE A.

If the customer has a complaint about an engine stall, proceed with this inspection.

  1. Connect the i-HDS to the vehicle, and turn the ignition to ON.
  2. Select PGM-FI, Mode Menu, then On-Board Snapshot.

On-Board Snapshot

  1. Select the on-board snapshot titled, Full List – Engine stall 2.

NOTE

There may be several on-board snapshot files. If there is no Engine stall 2 in the on-board snapshot, only do REPAIR PROCEDURE A – PGM-FI UPDATE.

  1. Select the Configuration icon.

  1. Select the Line Graph If Engine Speed is 0 RPM and AF Lambda is 2, while Vehicle Speed is greater than 0 MPH, the engine stalled. Proceed to the next step.

NOTE

If the on-board snapshot does not match the example shown above, the engine stall is not related to this issue in this bulletin. Do REPAIR PROCEDURE A – PGM-FI UPDATE, and continue normal diagnosis for the engine stall.

  1. E-mail the on-board snapshot to Part_Release@ahm.honda.com. Make sure to include the following information to obtain approval to order replacement parts:
  • VIN on the e-mail title and a picture of the VIN label on the door jamb
  • Dealer number
  • Vehicle mileage
  • On-board snapshot including the Engine stall 2 file

The on-board snapshot will be reviewed and you will receive a response within 24 hours.

After the on-board snapshot is reviewed, and the engine stall is NOT related to the fuel pump, or if the engine stall was not verified, do REPAIR PROCEDURE A – PGM-FI UPDATE.

After the on-board snapshot is reviewed, and verified that the engine stall is related to the fuel pump, do REPAIR PROCEDURE B – PGM-FI UPDATE AND FUEL PUMP REPLACEMENT. See the iN parts catalog for ordering instructions.

Do not call Tech Line unless you need additional diagnostic assistance.

 

REPAIR PROCEDURE A – PGM-FI UPDATE

NOTES

  • Connect a fully charged jumper battery to the vehicle and leave it connected during the entire procedure to maintain steady voltage.
  • Never turn the ignition to OFF or ACCESSORY during the update. If there is a problem with the update, leave the ignition turned to ON.
  • To prevent control unit damage, do not operate anything electrical (headlights, audio system, brakes, A/C, power windows, door locks, etc.) during the update.
  • Do not use the MongoosePro VCI tool.
  1. Update the PGM-FI using the i-HDS J2534 rewrite software with the MVCI or DST-i. Refer to Service Bulletin 01-023, Updating Control Units/Modules.
  2. Do the PCM idle learn procedure. Refer to the service information.
  3. Do the CKP pattern – clear/learn procedure. Refer to the service information.
  4. For California residents only: Fill out a Vehicle Emissions Recall – Proof of Correction certificate, and use N3X as the recall number. Give the certificate to your customer, and advise him or her to keep it as proof that the recall was completed. Your customer will need to submit this certificate to the DMV only if the DMV requests it. If you need more certificates, use reorder number Y0657.

REPAIR PROCEDURE B – PGM-FI UPDATE AND FUEL PUMP REPLACEMENT

NOTES

This notice is sent to you in accordance with the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act.

 

WHAT IS THE REASON FOR THIS NOTICE?

Honda has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain 2015–2017 model year Accord vehicles equipped with a V6 engine. Fuels containing high sodium content can contaminate certain internal components in the fuel pump and reduce fuel flow to the engine.

 

SAFETY CONSEQUENCE

Reduced fuel flow to the engine combined with vehicle operation in high temperature conditions can restrict vehicle acceleration and/or cause an engine stall, which increases the risk of a crash.

 

EMISSION CONSEQUENCE

The check engine light may illuminate as a result of this defect. Your vehicle may fail a state or local emissions inspection when such tests are required under state law if you do not have the repair done.

 

WHAT WILL HONDA DO?

The dealer will update the software for the engine control unit with programming that eliminates sodium contamination in the fuel pump for free. The dealer will also perform a diagnostic scan on your vehicle and, if the diagnostic scan confirms a previous occurrence of engine stalling, the fuel pump will be replaced for free.

 

WHAT SHOULD YOU DO?

Please call any Honda automobile dealer and make an appointment to have your vehicle’s software programming updated, a diagnostic scan performed and if necessary, the fuel pump will be replaced for free. Once you make an appointment for your vehicle, be advised that the reprogramming process may take approximately 30 minutes. If the fuel pump must be replaced, the total repair process (including software update) may take approximately 1 hour. However, your dealer can provide you with a better estimate of the overall time for this service visit, as it may be necessary to make your vehicle available for a longer period of time. If you are not the only driver of this vehicle, please advise all other drivers and passengers of this important information!

 

CHECK YOUR VEHICLE FOR OPEN RECALLS

You can check your vehicle’s eligibility for repair under this or any other recall. Please access the Honda Recall Lookup tool at www.recalls.honda.com and enter your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN).

 

CALIFORNIA OWNERS ONLY

The DMV will not renew your vehicle’s registration until this emissions recall has been completed. After completing the repair procedure, your dealer will give you a Vehicle Emission Recall – Proof of Correction certificate. Please make sure the dealer completes and provides you the certificate. Keep the certificate for your records as proof that the emissions recall was completed. Submit the certificate to the DMV only if the DMV requests it

¿CUÁL ES EL MOTIVO DE ESTA NOTIFICACIÓN?

Honda ha determinado que existe un defecto el cual está relacionado con la seguridad del vehículo en algunos vehículos modelo Accord año modelo 2015–2017 equipados con un motor V6. Los combustibles que contienen alto contenido de sodio pueden contaminar ciertos componentes internos en la bomba de combustible y reducir el flujo de combustible al motore.

 

CONSECUENCIA DE SEGURIDAD

El flujo de combustible reducido hacia el motor en combinación con el funcionamiento del vehículo en condiciones de altas temperaturas puede restringir la aceleración del vehículo y/o causar que el motor se detenga, lo cual aumenta el riesgo de un choque.

i-HDS Diagnostic Software and J2534 Reprogramming Software

American Honda Motor Co., Inc. ("Honda") offers the i-HDS (Honda Diagnostic System) software suite for the diagnosis and repair of electronic systems on Honda and Acura automobiles, and for the reprogramming of electronic control units (including, but not limited to, ECMs and PCMs). This software provides access to all Honda and Acura vehicle systems (access to the immobilizer security system requires a Security Professional level software subscription and Vehicle Security Professional [VSP] registration with NASTF). To use the i-HDS software, you need to purchase one of our convenient subscription options. In addition, you will need a pass-thru Vehicle Communication Device (VCI) that is compliant with SAE J2534-1 and J2534-2 in order to communicate with the vehicle

 

Vehicle Communication Interfaces (VCI)

The i-HDS software supports the use of a generic pass-thru VCI that is compliant with SAE J2534-1 and J2534-2. However, Honda recommends the Denso DST-i or the Bosch MVCI for use on Honda and Acura vehicles, as Honda has worked closely with these manufacturers to ensure their hardware and our software interact safely and within the J2534-1 and -2 specifications, for both diagnostics and reprogramming. If you choose to use a generic VCI, please carefully consider the customer and technical support options you will receive from your chosen device supplier. Honda does not provide technical or customer support for generic VCI devices.

The VCI Application Table below lists devices that either are approved and supported by Honda or are known to have completed and passed an independent, exhaustive validation program with our i-HDS software suite.

Reprogramming with the J2534 Rewrite Application in i-HDS

Included in the i-HDS software suite is a new reprogramming application called J2534 Rewrite. This application is made available to all subscribers of the i-HDS software suite and replaces the previous generation software, J2534 Honda Pass-thru Reprogramming Software.

This new application is compatible with generic VCIs that comply with SAE J2534. It must be used to reprogram any Honda/Acura vehicle equipped with ECUs that support reprogramming. Refer to the table below for legacy applicability for the programming of ECMs and PCMs. Though system dependent, late-model vehicles may be equipped with other ECUs that support reprogramming as well, e.g. ABS or VSA. J2534 Rewrite must be used to reprogram these control modules, as instructed in an applicable service bulletin.

As shown in this table, not all legacy Honda/Acura models are equipped with a reprogrammable ECM/PCM. Furthermore, all 2007 and later models not listed in the table are fully supported with this application.
