Driveshaft May Fail

Driveshaft failure can cause a sudden loss of drive power, or cause the vehicle to roll away when parked if the parking brake is not applied. Either condition can increase the risk of a crash or injury.

Summary

Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain 2021 Acura RDX and 2022 CR-V Hybrid vehicles. A component in the right or left front driveshaft may have been improperly heat-treated, which could result in driveshaft failure.

 

Remedy

Dealers will replace the right or left front driveshaft as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed January 24, 2022. Owners may contact Honda customer service 1-888-234-2138. Honda’s numbers for this recall are BBY, NBW, and OBX.

Statement by American Honda Regarding Front Driveshaft Recall: 2021 Acura
RDX and 2022 Honda CR-V Hybrid 

  • 279 vehicles are affected in the United States
  • Front driveshaft (left or right) will be replaced, for free
  • No in-market warranty claims or reported crashes/injuries; issue discovered by supplier

TORRANCE, Calif. – Dec. 13, 2021 – American Honda will voluntarily recall 279 Acura RDX (2021) and Honda CR-V Hybrid (2022) vehicles in the United States to replace the front left or right driveshaft, for free. Certain incorrectly manufactured front driveshafts may be subject to premature internal wear, which could cause a vehicle to lose motive power to the front wheels or to roll unexpectedly while in park without use of the parking brake. Both potential scenarios could increase the risk of a crash. Honda has not received any in-market warranty claims or reports of crash or injury related to this issue, which was discovered during quality inspections at the driveshaft supplier.

American Honda is announcing this recall to encourage each owner or lessee of an affected vehicle to take it to an authorized dealer as soon as they receive notification of this recall from Acura or Honda. Mailed notification to owners will occur in late-Jan. 2022. Defect description:

A component in the right or left front drive shaft installed in affected vehicles may have received improper heat treatment, resulting in increased wear and premature failure. If the front drive shaft prematurely fails, the engine will not provide motive power and the vehicle may roll away if the electronic parking brake has not been set (even if the gear selector had been placed in the Park position). Both conditions increase the risk of a crash or personal injury.

September 30, 2021

The supplier informed Honda of potentially suspect parts that were shipped to Honda. These potentially suspect parts were assembled with insufficiently heat-treated steel balls for the front drive shaft outboard joint sub-assembly. Honda placed these vehicles on stop-shipment as a precaution while awaiting analysis from the supplier.

 

Mid-October to mid-November, 2021

The supplier completed reproduction testing of the potentially suspect parts. After continued use, the steel balls could deform from heat generated by the drive shaft, resulting in outboard joint sub-assembly seizure and drive shaft failure. The supplier also confirmed with the Tier-2 supplier of the steel balls that only specific production lots received abnormal heat treatment due to improper air/gas mixture and temperature variation from furnace misfires.

 

November 25, 2021

Honda determined that a defect related to motor vehicle safety existed and decided to conduct a safety recall.

As of November 25, 2021, Honda has not received any warranty claims, field reports nor reports of crashes or injuries related to this issue.

Program for remedying the defect:

Registered owners of all affected vehicles will be contacted by mail and asked to bring their vehicle to an authorized Acura or Honda dealer. The dealer will replace the right or left front drive shaft as applicable, for free. Owners who have paid to have these repairs completed at their own expense will be eligible for reimbursement in accordance with the recall reimbursement plan on file with NHTSA.

i-HDS Diagnostic Software and J2534 Reprogramming Software

American Honda Motor Co., Inc. ("Honda") offers the i-HDS (Honda Diagnostic System) software suite for the diagnosis and repair of electronic systems on Honda and Acura automobiles, and for the reprogramming of electronic control units (including, but not limited to, ECMs and PCMs). This software provides access to all Honda and Acura vehicle systems (access to the immobilizer security system requires a Security Professional level software subscription and Vehicle Security Professional [VSP] registration with NASTF). To use the i-HDS software, you need to purchase one of our convenient subscription options. In addition, you will need a pass-thru Vehicle Communication Device (VCI) that is compliant with SAE J2534-1 and J2534-2 in order to communicate with the vehicle

 

Vehicle Communication Interfaces (VCI)

The i-HDS software supports the use of a generic pass-thru VCI that is compliant with SAE J2534-1 and J2534-2. However, Honda recommends the Denso DST-i or the Bosch MVCI for use on Honda and Acura vehicles, as Honda has worked closely with these manufacturers to ensure their hardware and our software interact safely and within the J2534-1 and -2 specifications, for both diagnostics and reprogramming. If you choose to use a generic VCI, please carefully consider the customer and technical support options you will receive from your chosen device supplier. Honda does not provide technical or customer support for generic VCI devices.

The VCI Application Table below lists devices that either are approved and supported by Honda or are known to have completed and passed an independent, exhaustive validation program with our i-HDS software suite.

Reprogramming with the J2534 Rewrite Application in i-HDS

Included in the i-HDS software suite is a new reprogramming application called J2534 Rewrite. This application is made available to all subscribers of the i-HDS software suite and replaces the previous generation software, J2534 Honda Pass-thru Reprogramming Software.

This new application is compatible with generic VCIs that comply with SAE J2534. It must be used to reprogram any Honda/Acura vehicle equipped with ECUs that support reprogramming. Refer to the table below for legacy applicability for the programming of ECMs and PCMs. Though system dependent, late-model vehicles may be equipped with other ECUs that support reprogramming as well, e.g. ABS or VSA. J2534 Rewrite must be used to reprogram these control modules, as instructed in an applicable service bulletin.

As shown in this table, not all legacy Honda/Acura models are equipped with a reprogrammable ECM/PCM. Furthermore, all 2007 and later models not listed in the table are fully supported with this application.
