Version 1
Safety Recall: 2021 RDX Left Side Front Driveshaft
AFFECTED VEHICLES
Year | Model | Trim | VIN Range |
2021 | RDX | ALL | Check the iN VIN status for eligibility. |
BACKGROUND
A small number of 2021 RDXs were manufactured with left side front driveshafts that have constant velocity joints (CV Joint) which were improperly manufactured. If the complete driveshaft is not replaced it could result in premature wear, excessive noise, vibration, and over time possible part failure. The affected vehicles will only have a left side front driveshaft that will need to be replaced. No vehicles will require both front drive shafts to be replaced. The VIN inquiry system will identify which vehicle needs the left side front driveshaft to be replaced.
CLIENT NOTIFICATION
Owners of affected vehicles will be sent a notification of this campaign.
Do an iN VIN status inquiry to make sure the vehicle is shown as eligible.
Some vehicles affected by this campaign may be in your new or used vehicle inventory.
Failure to repair a vehicle subject to a recall or campaign may subject your dealership to claims or lawsuits from the client or anyone else harmed as a result of such failure. To see if a vehicle in inventory is affected by this safety recall, do a VIN status inquiry before selling it.
CORRECTIVE ACTION
Replace the left side front driveshaft.

10. Remove the spindle nut.
11. Remove the outer joint.
12. Pry the inboard joint using a pry bar.
NOTE: Be careful not to damage the oil seal or the end of the inboard joint.
13. Remove the driveshaft as an assembly.
NOTE: Do not pull on the driveshaft, or the inboard joint may come apart. Pull the inboard joint straight out to avoid damaging the oil seal.
14. Make sure the set ring is in the groove on the new left driveshaft. Then, insert the inboard end of the driveshaft into the differential.
15. Make sure the bearing and spindle are clean of any debris or rust particles using a shop towel and/or compressed air. Then apply about 3 g (0.11 oz) of M-77 Assembly Paste (P/N 08798-9010) to the contact area of the outboard joint and the front wheel bearings, then install the outboard joint.
16. Apply oil or lube to the spindle nut surface only. Do not apply any to the threads of the spindle or nut.
17. Insert the outer driveshaft through the knuckle.
NOTE: During installation, apply specified grease to the contact area shown.
18. Install the new spindle nut and torque it to 328 N.m (242 lb-ft) using a torque wrench. If you are going to use an Air or Battery Powered Impact Gun to install the nut, make sure to turn down the air or power so you do not over tighten it, then torque it to specification using a torque wrench.
NOTE:
- Do not use a stake, punch or screwdriver in the brake rotor to keep it from moving. Have an assistant press on the brakes while you are tightening.
- Use a drift to stake the spindle nut shoulder against the driveshaft.
- Check the spindle nut shoulder as shown.
- Be careful not to make a crack on the spindle nut when staking.
19. Connect the lower ball joint and torque the nuts to 64 N.m (47 lb-ft).
NOTE: During assembly, loosely install the new flange nuts then, tighten to the specified torque in the numbered sequence shown.
20. Install the tie rod.
21. Install the front wheel.
22. Turn the wheel by hand and make sure there is not interference between the driveshaft and surrounding parts.
23. Refill the transmission with the recommended fluid through the filler plug hole.
NOTE: Using the wrong type of fluid will damage the transmission.
Type | Operation | Specifications |
Without AWD | At Fluid Change | 4.3L (4.5 US qt) |
At Overhaul | 8.3 L (8.8 US qt) | |
With AWD | At Fluid Change | 4.8 L (5.1 US qt) |
At Overhaul | 8.8 L (9.3 US qt) |
24. Temporally install the filler plug with the old washer.
NOTE:
- Check the ATF level right after shifting the transmission through all of the positions/modes and turning the engine OFF.
- There are two types of level plugs, integrated washer type and separated washer type.
- Engine warmed up (the radiator fan comes on twice).
- Engine undercover removed.
25. Start the engine.
26. While pressing the brake pedal firmly, shift the transmission to P-R-N-D-S-2nd-S-D-N-R-P position/mode, and wait at least 3 seconds in each position/mode.
NOTE: To shift to 2nd gear, enter the sequential sportshift mode by pressing the paddle shifter while in the S position/mode.
27. Turn the engine OFF.
28. Integrated washer type: Remove the level plug.
29. Separated washer type: Remove the level plug with the sealing washer.
30. Make sure the ATF level is at the proper level.
Normal Conditions
Proper Transmission Fluid (ATF) Level. |
The ATF is dripping from the level plug hole. |
31. If necessary, remove the filler plug with the sealing washer, and add the recommended fluid through the filler plughole until the ATF overflows from the level plug hole.
