Summary
Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain model year 2014-2015 Honda Accord Hybrid vehicles manufactured August 29, 2013, to May 30, 2015. Electrical interference may cause the hybrid system to switch into fail-safe mode, disabling the gasoline engine, limiting the vehicle’s speed to 40 miles per hour and functioning only on battery power. Once the battery is discharged, the vehicle will stall.
Remedy
Honda will notify owners, and dealers will update the hybrid system software, free of charge. The recall began on November 6, 2015. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138. Honda’s number for this recall is JT7.

REVISION SUMMARY
Under REPAIR PROCEDURE, a step was added to include completing the Vehicle Emissions Recall โ Proof of Correction certificate for vehicles registered in California.
BACKGROUND
The cell voltage sensor may incorrectly interpret electrical noise from the inverter and motor circuits as a problem and cause the vehicle to switch to a fail-safe EV mode. Additionally, DTCs P0B3B, high voltage battery cell voltage sensor internal circuit malfunction and P0DA8, motor power inverter module voltage malfunction are often stored.
If the vehicle switches to fail-safe EV mode while cruising at highway speed, the engine shuts off and the vehicle will experience a sudden loss of power as the fail-safe EV mode limits vehicle speed to a maximum of about 40 mph. If this occurs, the vehicle may be able to travel for up to 2 miles in fail-safe EV mode, at which time the HV battery will likely fully discharge. If the battery completely discharges while the vehicle is still in operation, the vehicle will stall, increasing the risk of a crash.

Some vehicles affected by this campaign may be in your used vehicle inventory. These vehicles must be repaired before they are sold.
Should your dealership sell an unrepaired vehicle that subsequently causes injury or damage because of the recalled item, the dealership will be solely responsible to the damaged party, and will be required to defend and indemnify American Honda for any resulting claims. To see if a vehicle in inventory is affected by this recall, do a VIN status inquiry before selling it.

Do the inspection and based on your results, update the vehicle or replace the HV battery.

Before beginning the repair, make sure that both the HDS and the MVCI are updated as listed above. Do only the update listed in this service bulletin.
Check that the MVCI indicates the applicable program ID listed below (or a later program ID) as the Available Update when the update begins. If the MVCI displays This vehicle does not need an update at this time during the update, the software for this service bulletin is already installed.

INSPECTION AND UPDATE PROCEDURE
- Connect the HDS and check for DTCs.
- If DTC P0B3B or P0DA8 is not set, go to step 4.
- If DTC P0B3B and/or P0DA8 is set, do not clear the DTC(s). Save all the freeze data, then go to step 2.
NOTE:
- Make sure that you upload the collected freeze data.
- If P0B3B and/or P0DA8 is not present, it is possible that error code 0010100 may be stored in one or more locations. This is normal if the key is cycled quickly. To clear this error code, just turn the key off for more than one minute.
- Refer to the HV Battery Diagnosis in the job aid New Procedures for Servicing the High Voltage Battery.
NOTE: The file saved to the desktop (see page 5 of the job aid) contains the HV battery cell voltage failure information for sensor A, sensor B, and sensor C. The errors are 8 digits and appear as a series of 0s and 1s. The CVS failure codes are also available in the stored HDS DTCs Freeze data.
- Check the list for the following failures:
NOTE: The error codes in each failure series can be in any order as long as all the codes in each row are present in the HV battery diagnosis.

- If any one of the six error code failure series appears, write down the failure codes on the RO before clearing all set codes, then go to step 4.
- If a different failure series appears, write down any other the failure code(s) that may be stored on the RO. Save the HDS freeze data and the Cell Voltage Sensor Check data, then replace the HV battery. Refer to service information. You will need to file a separate warranty claim under normal warranty for replacing the HV battery.
- Update the CVS software with the MVCI. Refer to Service Bulletin 01-023, Updating Control Units/Modules. This product update is complete.

i-HDS Diagnostic Software and J2534 Reprogramming Software
American Honda Motor Co., Inc. ("Honda") offers the i-HDS (Honda Diagnostic System) software suite for the diagnosis and repair of electronic systems on Honda and Acura automobiles, and for the reprogramming of electronic control units (including, but not limited to, ECMs and PCMs). This software provides access to all Honda and Acura vehicle systems (access to the immobilizer security system requires aย Security Professionalย level software subscription and Vehicle Security Professional [VSP] registration with NASTF). To use the i-HDS software, you need to purchase one of our convenient subscription options. In addition, you will need a pass-thru Vehicle Communication Device (VCI) that is compliant with SAE J2534-1 and J2534-2 in order to communicate with the vehicle
Vehicle Communication Interfaces (VCI)
The i-HDS software supports the use of a generic pass-thru VCI that is compliant with SAE J2534-1 and J2534-2. However, Honda recommends the Denso DST-i or the Bosch MVCI for use on Honda and Acura vehicles, as Honda has worked closely with these manufacturers to ensure their hardware and our software interact safely and within the J2534-1 and -2 specifications, for both diagnostics and reprogramming. If you choose to use a generic VCI, please carefully consider the customer and technical support options you will receive from your chosen device supplier. Honda does not provide technical or customer support for generic VCI devices.
The VCI Application Table below lists devices that either are approved and supported by Honda or are known to have completed and passed an independent, exhaustive validation program with our i-HDS software suite.

Reprogramming with theย J2534 Rewriteย Application in i-HDS
Included in the i-HDS software suite is a new reprogramming application called J2534 Rewrite. This application is made available to all subscribers of the i-HDS software suite and replaces the previous generation software,ย J2534 Honda Pass-thru Reprogramming Software.
This new application is compatible with generic VCIs that comply with SAE J2534. It must be used to reprogram any Honda/Acura vehicle equipped with ECUs that support reprogramming. Refer to the table below for legacy applicability for the programming of ECMs and PCMs. Though system dependent, late-model vehicles may be equipped with other ECUs that support reprogramming as well, e.g. ABS or VSA.ย J2534 Rewriteย must be used to reprogram these control modules, as instructed in an applicable service bulletin.
As shown in this table, not all legacy Honda/Acura models are equipped with a reprogrammable ECM/PCM. Furthermore, all 2007 and later models not listed in the table are fully supported with this application.
