Potential Number of Units Affected 210,000
Summary
Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain 2013-2015 Acura ILX, 2013 Acura ILX Hybrid, 2012 Honda Civic Hybrid, and 2007-2008 Honda Fit vehicles with a manual transmission and 2009-2014 Honda Fit vehicles originally sold, or ever registered, in Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, and Wisconsin. The drive shafts’ protective coating may not have been applied properly during manufacturing, making it more susceptible to damage from road salt, or other contaminants, and potentially cause it to break.
Remedy
Honda will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the drive shafts, replacing either the left or right drive shaft, if necessary, free of charge. Owners were notified of the safety risk with an interim letter mailed February 2, 2021. A second letter will be sent once the remedy is available. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138. Honda’s numbers for this recall are P9M, PAV, BAY, TAX, CA0, and MAZ.
Notes
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.

Statement by American Honda Regarding Left and Right Front Drive Shaft Recalls
- Approximately 430,000 Acura and Honda vehicles are included in separate left and right front drive shaft recalls in 22 salt belt states of the U.S., plus Washington D.C.
- Drive shafts will be inspected and, if needed, replaced, for free
- No reported crashes or injuries related to this issue
TORRANCE, Calif. – Dec. 15, 2020 – American Honda will conduct two voluntarily recalls affecting approximately 430,000 Acura and Honda vehicles in 22 salt belt states and the District of Columbia in the United States to inspect and, if needed, replace their left and/or right front drive shafts, for free. Both recalls are in response to possible breakage of the drive shafts due to corrosion caused by a combination of potentially damaged or incorrectly cured protective coatings during driveshaft assembly and longterm exposure to road salt primarily used in the northeastern United States. If a drive shaft breaks, it may cause a loss of motive power or allow the vehicle to roll while in the parking gear if the parking brake is not activated, both increasing the risk of a crash or injury. No crashes or injuries have been reported in relation to either condition. The recalls will apply to vehicles that were originally sold or ever registered in these 22 states and the District of Columbia, where road salt is regularly used in the winter: CT, DC, DE, IL, IN, IA, KY, ME, MD, MA, MI, MN, MO, NH, NJ, NY, OH, PA, RI, VT, VI, WV, WI.
At the time of this announcement, repair parts are not available for all vehicles involved in these recalls. Therefore, initial mailed notifications, beginning in early-Feb 2021 may inform certain vehicle owners of the recall and advise them to await later notification before seeking inspection and repair. American Honda encourages each owner of an affected vehicle to take it to an authorized dealer as soon as they receive notification that an inspection and potential repair is available for their vehicle. Owners can also determine if their specific vehicles are included in the recall and will later require inspection by visiting www.recalls.honda.com or www.recalls.acura.com or by calling (888) 234-2138.

Excerpt from NHTSA acknowledgement letter for our driveshaft recall:
Please submit what will be Honda’s procedure for [#1] addressing corrosion-related driveshaft failure in vehicles outside of the included states and [#2] the procedure for addressing corrosion related driveshaft failure in vehicles that previously were inspected and deemed to not need a driveshaft replacement.
#1
Honda is implementing the following process to address out-of-scope vehicles. If a customer contacts a dealership and believes their vehicle should be included in the driveshaft recall campaign due to information not available to Honda (either at the time of recall announcement or thereafter), the dealer will contact their Honda District Parts and Service Manager (DPSM). The customer will also be advised to contact Honda’s Automobile Customer Service (ACS) to discuss their concerns and an internal review will be conducted to determine if the vehicle should be qualified for the recall repair. If the vehicle is determined to qualify, an owner recall notice letter will be mailed to the customer. The VIN will also be loaded into the system and a revised DIR updating total affected vehicles and manufacturer production range (if applicable) will be submitted to the NHTSA portal.
Honda’s recall service bulletins will be updated with the note: “The affected VIN population for this recall was determined based on information available to Honda at the time the recall was announced. If a customer believes their vehicle should be included in the campaign due to information not available to Honda (either at the time of recall announcement or thereafter), contact your DPSM and have the customer contact American Honda with their concern. For any questions or concerns that customers may have, you may direct them to contact American Honda’s Customer Support & Campaign Center at 888-234-2138.” The service bulletins also include a video to assist technicians with the recall repair inspection and DPSMs have met with dealers to review the repair inspection procedure.
#2.
For customer vehicles that had the remedy process completed, Honda believes these vehicle’s parts will extend the vehicle’s life even with usage in salt belt states.
When the drive shaft is replaced, the new parts have been estimated to extend the vehicle life by more than 9.0 years (which means more than 15 years from vehicle first sales) as shown in the following table.
Table 1. Remaining vehicle life prediction after replacement
Even in cases when Honda judges as “No need for replacement” or out-of-scope due to registration outside of salt belt states, Honda will continue to take care the customer concerns indicated in #1.
Also, Honda estimates the recurrence risk of this issue to be low as shown in the following calculation.
1) D/Shaft NG ratio (estimated from market investigation) 76.19% = Non-replacement ratio: 23.81%
2) Likelihood of change in registration to SB states from Dec 2020 until Dec 2026: 5.36% (Calculated based on registration data of 2013-2020 Accord)
3) Occurrence ratio of D/shaft breakage caused by manufacturing failure: 0.08%
Total occurrence ratio : 23.81% x 5.36% x 0.08% =0.001%

Defect description:
The drive shafts’ protective coating application process may not allow the protective coating to properly adhere to the drive shaft installed in affected vehicles. A drive shaft with an improperly adhered protective coating is more susceptible to damage from road debris. In salt-belt states where de-icing agents are used to maintain the roadway, the de-icing agents could accumulate on the damaged areas of the drive shaft and corrode it. A corroded drive shaft could break under high torque application, and the engine will no longer propel the vehicle in any gear. The vehicle may also roll away if the parking brake has not been set (even if the gear selector had been placed in the Park position for vehicles with automatic/continuously variable transmission). Both conditions increase the risk of a crash or injury without prior warning.
Chronology:
September to November 2017
Honda received the first report of a broken drive shaft in an Acura ILX and launched an investigation.
February 2018
Honda identified that during drive shaft assembly, certain drive shafts were allowed to cool to room temperature due to equipment stoppage on the assembly line or were taken off-line for repairs. A running change was implemented to ensure all drive shafts remained at the specified temperature throughout the assembly process.
September to October 2018
Honda received another report of a broken drive shaft, which was the first report involving a Honda Fit. Honda continued its investigation.
July to December 2019
The investigation was expanded to include global support. Since the suspect population of vehicles were no longer covered under warranty, a parts collection activity was launched.
April to October 2020
Data from the parts collection activity was analyzed to understand the factors resulting in a broken drive shaft and the expected longevity of in-market parts. The analysis concluded that the broken drive shafts were allowed to cool to a temperature below specification prior to application of the protective coating. The reduced temperature decreased the protective coating’s adhesion, increasing the likelihood of damage and corrosion. Occurrences were also limited to drive shafts utilizing a shear-type dynamic damper, which are more susceptible to corrosion from de-icing agents.
December 3, 2020
Honda determined that a defect related to motor vehicle safety existed and decided to conduct a safety recall.
As of November 24, 2020, Honda has received 152 warranty claims, 10 field reports, and no reports of crashes or injuries related to this issue.
Program for remedying the defect:
Depending on the parts availability, registered owners of some affected vehicles will be contacted by mail and asked to take their vehicle to an authorized Acura or Honda dealer. The dealer will inspect both left and right drive shafts for corrosion-related protective coating deformities near the drive shaft’s dynamic damper. If there are deformities near the dynamic damper (40mm for Honda Civic Hybrid and Fit, 50mm for Acura ILX and ILX Hybrid), the drive shaft will be replaced for free. Drives hafts that do not meet the 40mm/50mm requirement will not be replaced as it is estimated the drive shafts will not break for the remaining expected life of the vehicle.
Registered owners of affected vehicles that have limited parts availability will be notified in an interim notification that the parts necessary to repair their vehicles are currently unavailable. Honda will send a second notification when parts become available, and the dealer will inspect/repair the vehicles for free.
Owners who have paid to have these repairs completed at their own expense will be eligible for reimbursement, in accord with the recall reimbursement plan on file with NHTSA.
The estimated date to start notification to dealers: December 11, 2020
The estimated date to start notifications to owners: February 1, 2021
Representative copies of all notices, bulletins and other communications:
A copy of the dealer service bulletin, the final customer notification letter, and other dealer communications will be submitted to your office as soon as possible.
A draft of the owner notification letter will be submitted to your office as soon as possible.
