Safety Recall – Drive Shaft May Corrode and Fail – 2013-2015 Honda Accord

December 10, 2020 NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 20V769000

Drive Shaft May Corrode and Fail

A broken drive shaft may cause a sudden loss of drive power. The vehicle could also roll away if the parking brake has not been applied before the vehicle has been exited. Either condition can increase the risk of a crash or injury.

NHTSA Campaign Number: 20V769

Manufacturer HondaeBay logo (American HondaeBay logo Motor Co.)

Components POWER TRAIN

Potential Number of Units Affected 220,000

Summary

HondaeBay logo (American HondaeBay logo Motor Co.) is recalling certain 2013-2015 Accord vehicles equipped with a 4-cylinder engine and a continuously-variable transmission that were originally sold, or ever registered, in Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, and Wisconsin. The drive shafts were assembled with a lubricant that may have degraded the drive shafts’ protective coating, making it more susceptible to damage from road salt or other contaminants, and potentially cause it to break.

Remedy

HondaeBay logo will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the drive shafts, replacing both the left and right drive shafts, if necessary, free of charge. The recall began February 4, 2021. Owners may contact HondaeBay logo customer service at 1-888-234-2138.

Notes

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.

Statement by American HondaeBay logo Regarding Left and Right Front Drive Shaft Recalls

  • Approximately 430,000 AcuraeBay logo and HondaeBay logo vehicles are included in separate left and right front drive shaft recalls in 22 salt belt states of the U.S., plus Washington D.C.
  • Drive shafts will be inspected and, if needed, replaced, for free
  • No reported crashes or injuries related to this issue

TORRANCE, Calif. โ€“ Dec. 15, 2020 โ€“ American HondaeBay logo will conduct two voluntarily recalls affecting approximately 430,000 AcuraeBay logo and HondaeBay logo vehicles in 22 salt belt states and the District of Columbia in the United States to inspect and, if needed, replace their left and/or right front drive shafts, for free. Both recalls are in response to possible breakage of the drive shafts due to corrosion caused by a combination of potentially damaged or incorrectly cured protective coatings during driveshaft assembly and longterm exposure to road salt primarily used in the northeastern United States. If a drive shaft breaks, it may cause a loss of motive power or allow the vehicle to roll while in the parking gear if the parking brake is not activated, both increasing the risk of a crash or injury. No crashes or injuries have been reported in relation to either condition.  The recalls will apply to vehicles that were originally sold or ever registered in these 22 states and the District of Columbia, where road salt is regularly used in the winter: CT, DC, DE, IL, IN, IA, KY, ME, MD, MA, MI, MN, MO, NH, NJ, NY, OH, PA, RI, VT, VI, WV, WI.

At the time of this announcement, repair parts are not available for all vehicles involved in these recalls. Therefore, initial mailed notifications, beginning in early-Feb 2021 may inform certain vehicle owners of the recall and advise them to await later notification before seeking inspection and repair. American HondaeBay logo encourages each owner of an affected vehicle to take it to an authorized dealer as soon as they receive notification that an inspection and potential repair is available for their vehicle. Owners can also determine if their specific vehicles are included in the recall and will later require inspection by visiting www.recalls.honda.com or www.recalls.acura.com or by calling (888) 234-2138.

Excerpt from NHTSA acknowledgement letter for our driveshaft recall:

Please submit what will be HondaeBay logo’s procedure for [#1] addressing corrosion-related driveshaft failure in vehicles outside of the included states and [#2] the procedure for addressing corrosion related driveshaft failure in vehicles that previously were inspected and deemed to not need a driveshaft replacement.

#1

HondaeBay logo is implementing the following process to address out-of-scope vehicles.  If a customer contacts a dealership and believes their vehicle should be included in the driveshaft recall campaign due to information not available to HondaeBay logo (either at the time of recall announcement or thereafter), the dealer will contact their HondaeBay logo District Parts and Service Manager (DPSM).  The customer will also be advised to contact HondaeBay logoโ€™s Automobile Customer Service (ACS) to discuss their concerns and an internal review will be conducted to determine if the vehicle should be qualified for the recall repair.  If the vehicle is determined to qualify, an owner recall notice letter will be mailed to the customer.  The VIN will also be loaded into the system and a revised DIR updating total affected vehicles and manufacturer production range (if applicable) will be submitted to the NHTSA portal.

HondaeBay logoโ€™s recall service bulletins will be updated with the note: โ€œThe affected VIN population for this recall was determined based on information available to HondaeBay logo at the time the recall was announced. If a customer believes their vehicle should be included in the campaign due to information not available to HondaeBay logo (either at the time of recall announcement or thereafter), contact your DPSM and have the customer contact American HondaeBay logo with their concern. For any questions or concerns that customers may have, you may direct them to contact American HondaeBay logoโ€™s Customer Support & Campaign Center at 888-234-2138.โ€  The service bulletins also include a video to assist technicians with the recall repair inspection and DPSMs have met with dealers to review the repair inspection procedure.

#2.

For customer vehicles that had the remedy process completed, HondaeBay logo believes these vehicleโ€™s parts will extend the vehicleโ€™s life even with usage in salt belt states.

When the drive shaft is replaced, the new parts have been estimated to extend the vehicle life by more than 9.0 years (which means more than 15 years from vehicle first sales) as shown in the following table.

Table 1.  Remaining vehicle life prediction after replacement

Even in cases when HondaeBay logo judges as โ€œNo need for replacementโ€ or out-of-scope due to registration outside of salt belt states, HondaeBay logo will continue to take care the customer concerns indicated in #1.

Also, HondaeBay logo estimates the recurrence risk of this issue to be low as shown in the following calculation.

1) D/Shaft NG ratio (estimated from market investigation) 76.19%  =  Non-replacement ratio: 23.81%

2) Likelihood of change in  registration to SB states from Dec 2020 until Dec 2026:   5.36%  (Calculated based on registration data of 2013-2020 Accord)

3) Occurrence ratio of D/shaft breakage caused by manufacturing failure: 0.08%

Total occurrence ratio : 23.81% x 5.36% x 0.08%   =0.001%

Description of the basis for the determination of the recall population:

The recall population was determined based on manufacturing, sales, and vehicle registration records. The manufacturing range reflects all possible vehicles that could potentially experience the problem.

Description of how the vehicles being recalled differ from similar vehicles not included in the recall:

The recall is specific to vehicles sold or ever registered in the salt-belt region (Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, D.C., West Virginia, and Wisconsin). There have been no reports of occurrences outside the salt-belt region.

Only vehicles configured with a 4-cylinder engine and continuously variable transmission had drive shafts installed that were assembled with a lubricant during a specific production period. Some similar vehicles with the same drivetrain configuration are not included in the recall because:  1) the drive shafts in those vehicles were assembled outside the specific production period when the lubricant was used; or 2) the drive shafts installed in those vehicles were from a different supplier.

Identification of affected component:

Component:Drive Shaft Assy., L.             Drive Shaft Assy., R.
Part No.:44306-T2A-A50                    44305-T2A-A50
Country of Origin:U.S.
Manufacturer:HondaeBay logo of America Mfg., Inc.

Total number of potentially affected vehicles: TBD

Percentage of affected vehicles that contain the defect: 100%

Defect description:

The drive shafts installed in affected vehicles were assembled with a lubricant that accelerated the degradation of the drive shaftsโ€™ protective coating. A drive shaft with a degraded protective coating is more susceptible to damage from road debris. In salt-belt states where de-icing agents are used to maintain the roadway, the de-icing agents could accumulate on the damaged areas

of the drive shaft and corrode it. A corroded drive shaft could break under high torque application, and the engine will no longer propel the vehicle in any gear. The vehicle may also roll away if the parking brake has not been set (even if the gear selector had been placed in the Park position). Both conditions increase the risk of a crash or injury without prior warning.

Chronology:

October to November 2017

HondaeBay logo received the first report of a broken drive shaft. The failed part was returned from the field for analysis and no manufacturing defects were found.

August to December 2018

After receiving additional market claims, HondaeBay logo launched an investigation in tandem with reports of broken drive shafts in other HondaeBay logo vehicles. Material analysis of failed return parts found damage to the drive shaftโ€™s protective coating from chemical agents and HondaeBay logo began corrosion growth speed testing.

February to May 2019

Investigations identified that a specific lubricant was used as an assembly aid from February 2013 to September 2014, which coincided with the same period when the broken driven shafts were produced. The lubricant was found to interfere with the protective coating adhesion process.

November 2019

A different drive shaft supplier was used in mass production and to supply replacement service parts to the market from October 2014. Analysis of these parts found no problems with the protective coating or other factors related to corrosion.

June to October 2020

Based on the corrosion growth speed testing started in late 2018, the data was analyzed to understand the factors resulting in a broken drive shaft and the expected longevity of in-market parts.

December 3, 2020

HondaeBay logo determined that a defect related to motor vehicle safety existed and decided to conduct a safety recall.

As of November 24, 2020, HondaeBay logo has received 189 warranty claims, and no field reports nor reports of crashes or injuries related to this issue.

Program for remedying the defect:

Registered owners of all affected vehicles will be contacted by mail and asked to take their vehicle to an authorized HondaeBay logo dealer. The dealer will inspect for corrosion-related protective coating deformities near the drive shaftโ€™s dynamic damper. If there are deformities within 40mm of the dynamic damper, both left and right drive shafts will be replaced for free. No repairs will be completed on vehicles not meeting the 40mm requirement, as it is estimated the drive shaft will not break for the remaining expected life of the vehicle. Owners who have paid to have these repairs completed at their own expense will be eligible for reimbursement, in accord with the recall reimbursement plan on file with NHTSA.

The estimated date to start notification to dealers: December 11, 2020

The estimated date to start notifications to owners: February 1, 2021

Representative copies of all notices, bulletins and other communications:

A copy of the dealer service bulletin, the final customer notification letter, and other dealer communications will be submitted to your office as soon as possible.

A draft of the owner notification letter will be submitted to your office as soon as possible.
