A power sliding door that fails to latch may open while moving, increasing the risk of injury.
NHTSA Campaign Number: 20V437
Manufacturer Honda (American Honda
Motor Co.)
Components LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES
Potential Number of Units Affected 324,194
Summary
Honda (America Honda
Motor Co.) is recalling certain 2018-2020 Odyssey vehicles. Water may enter the outer door handle cables for the sliding doors. If this occurs, the outer door handle cables may freeze in cold temperatures, preventing the front and rear sliding door latches from securely latching.
Remedy
Honda will notify owners, and dealers will replace the power sliding door outer handle cables, free of charge. The recall began September 23, 2020. Owners may contact Honda
customer service at 1-888-234-2138. Honda
’s number for this recall is A88.
Notes
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.

Safety Recall: 2018 – 20 Odyssey Sliding Door Outer Handle Cables
Supersedes 20-024, dated July 9, 2021, to revise the information highlighted in yellow.
AFFECTED VEHICLES
Year | Model | Trim Level | VIN Range |

REVISION SUMMARY
Under REPAIR PROCEDURE, the images were revised in steps 7 and 8, and step 24 was revised.
BACKGROUND
Water passing the sliding door outer handles, can enter the door outer handle cables assembly due to poor sealing properties. During freezing temperature conditions the water inside the cable assemblies will freeze. This condition causes additional friction and increases the risk of the door latching mechanism from closing completely, leading to an unsafe condition during vehicle operation.
CUSTOMER NOTIFICATION
Owners of affected vehicles will be sent a notification of this campaign.
Do an iN VIN status inquiry to make sure the vehicle is shown as eligible.
Some vehicles affected by this campaign may be in your new or used vehicle inventory.
Failure to repair a vehicle subject to a recall or campaign may subject your dealership to claims or lawsuits from the customer or anyone else harmed as a result of such failure. Before selling a vehicle in inventory, always check if it is affected by a safety recall by conducting a VIN status inquiry.
CORRECTIVE ACTION
Replace the left and right sliding door exterior door handle cables and bush joints.

REPAIR PROCEDURE
The images in this repair procedure show the left side of the vehicle. The right side is a mirror image of these images.
1. Remove the second row outer seats.
NOTE: Remove any child or booster seats that are installed in the second row seats, and place them in the cargo area for the customer to install.
2. Confirm both sliding door windows are raised to the fully closed position.
3. Remove the air intake duct.
4. Disconnect the 12-volt battery.
NOTE:
- Always disconnect the negative terminal first.
- To protect the battery sensor connector from damage, do not hold it when removing the terminal.
- Do not disconnect the 12-volt battery sensor from the cable.
4.1 Make sure the ignition is turned to OFF.
4.2 Disconnect and isolate the negative cable with the 12-volt battery sensor from the 12-volt battery.
4.3 Disconnect and isolate the positive cable from the 12-volt battery.
5. Using a wire hook, pull the clip off of the inner handle shaft and remove the inner handle. Make sure to cover the bottom part of the inner handle with a clean shop towel to capture the clip.
NOTE: If you do not have a clean shop towel under the inner handle, you risk losing the clip.
6. With the sliding door open, push the door lock knob down to the locked position to prevent it from being damaged when removing the door panel.
7. Remove the two clips at the bottom of the door panel first with a trim pad remover to release the lower door seal from the door panel
NOTE: Removing the two clips prevents pulling the door seal off the door as the door panel is lifted and removed.
8. Starting at the bottom of the door panel, remove the remaining clips with a commercially available trim pad remover.
9. Starting at the rear, pull the door panel upward while making sure the clips from step 7 are free and not pulling on the lower door seal. Pull the door panel away from the inner handle shaft, and lift it upward.
NOTE: To prevent damage to the door lock knob, make sure it is in the locked position.
10. While holding the sliding door panel away from the door, disconnect the connector. Then, remove the door panel.
11. Remove the sliding door lock knob assembly.
11.1 Release the cable fastener.
11.2 Disconnect the door lock knob rod.
11.3 Remove the sliding door lock knob assembly.
12. Disconnect the outer door handle cable from the remote control assembly.
12.1 Release the cable holder and cable fastener, then disconnect the orange outer handle cable.
12.2 Remove the 10 mm bolts and green clips, then detach the remote control assembly.
NOTE: Do not completely remove the remote control assembly. Just detach it from the door panel assembly to sliding door panel barrier B.
13. Remove sliding door panel barrier B.
14. Remove sliding door panel plug cap A.
15. Insert a flat-tip screwdriver through the plug opening to detach the bush joint from the cable end fitting.
16. Sit in the sliding door opening with both legs in front of the lower roller as shown to avoid straddling the lower roller, then detach the cable holder.
NOTICE
Be careful when getting into position or exiting the vehicle. Avoid accidently kicking and possibly damaging the sliding door articulating harness.
17. Insert a 1/4″ extension into the back of the bush joint cavity. While pushing on the extension, insert the needle nose pliers through the plug opening to pull the cable end fitting from the bush joint.
18. Release the exterior handle cable clip and the front door lock cable clip and grommet, then remove the cable from the door.
19. Place several clean shop towels into the front most corner of the door cavity to prevent the bush joint from falling into the bottom of the door should it be dropped during removal.
20. Insert 90° needle nose pliers through the plug opening to hold the bush joint. Insert a 1/4″ drive, 6 point, 7 mm socket into the back of the bush joint cavity to compress / release the bush joint tabs, and remove the bush joint from the handle base.
NOTE: Be careful not the drop the bush joint into the door.
21. Use the 90° needle nose pliers to insert the new bush joint. Make sure it snaps into place and fully sets.
NOTE: Make sure to use the correct cable kit for the sliding door you are working on.
22. Install the new sliding door outer handle cable.
NOTE:
- Make sure to use the correct cable kit for the sliding door you are working on.
- Make sure the cables are routed as shown.
23. Install the new sliding door outer handle cables to the remote control assembly.
23.1 Remove the shop towels in the door cavity that was placed to prevent objects from falling into the door. Install sliding door panel barrier B, then the remote control assembly.
24. Install all of the remaining parts in the reverse order of removal. Tighten all fasteners to the specified torque, and make sure of the following:
- The Inner handle is fully set.
- The manual lock knob functions/moves freely.
- The sliding door panel plug cap A is installed.
- All of the clips on both door panel and door seal are set.
NOTE: To prevent miss-setting the door panel, make sure you install it exactly as shown.
25. Replace the cable and bush joint on the other side following steps 5 thru 24.
26. Connect the battery cables.
26.1 While holding down the terminal, torque both positive and negative clamps to 35-53 lb-in (4-6 N•m).
NOTE:
- Do not over torque the terminal.
- Always connect the positive side first.
26.2 Make sure the battery terminals are correctly attached as shown.
27. Install the air intake duct.
28. Turn the ignition to ON.
28.1 Press and hold the volume/power knob to exit the anti-theft mode.
28.2 Make sure both sliding door window switches work properly along with the auto up/down feature.
NOTE: If you did not disconnect and connect the battery as stated in steps 4 and 26, the auto up/down feature may not work properly. To restore that feature, do the Resetting the Power Window Control Unit procedure in the service information.
29. Install the second row outer seats.
29.1 Insert the front seat hooks into the front floor strikers.
29.2 After confirming both front hooks are fully inserted into the front strikers, begin to lower the seat, then allow it to drop and lock to the rear strikers.
29.3 Raise the seat-back to an upright position, then rock the seat back and forth to confirm both the inner and outer latches are securely locked into position.

Statement by American Honda Regarding Four Automobile Recalls
- Approximately 608,000 total vehicles are affected in the United States
- Free recall repairs, varying by specific vehicle, include two software updates, replacement of rear view cameras and replacement of sliding door outer handle cables
- No reported crashes or injuries related to these actions
TORRANCE, Calif. – Aug. 4, 2020 – American Honda will voluntarily recall approximately 608,000 model-year 2018-2020 Honda
Odyssey, 2019-2020 Passport and 2019-2021 Pilot vehicles in the United States to complete one or more of four recall repairs, for free. There have been no reports of crashes or injuries related to these actions.
Honda is announcing these recalls to encourage each owner of an affected vehicle to take it to an authorized dealer as soon as they receive notification from Honda
. Mailed notification to owners will begin in late-September 2020. Owners of these models can also determine if their specific vehicles are included in the recall by visiting www.recalls.honda.com or by calling (888) 234-2138.
Recall Summaries:
Gauge Control Module Software Recall:
Software that controls the speedometer display will be updated, for free, to prevent potential malfunctions, including temporary shutdown of the display. If the speedometer does not display properly, a driver may unknowingly exceed safe speeds, increasing the risk of a crash.
Front Control Box Software Recall:
Software that controls display of the rear view camera image will be updated, for free, to prevent potential malfunctions including delayed display of the rear view and display failure under certain circumstances when the reverse gear is selected. A delayed or absent rear view display may increase the risk of a crash.
Rear View Camera Replacement Recall:
Rear view camera assemblies will be replaced with updated units, for free, to resolve durability issues that may distort the image or prevent display of the rear view when the reverse gear is selected. An absent rear view display may increase the risk of a crash.
Sliding Door Outer Handle Cable Recall: 2018-2020 Honda Odyssey
Updated sliding door outer handle cables will be installed in affected vehicles, for free. Water may enter the outer handles of the sliding doors and drip onto the cables connected to the door latch mechanisms. In freezing temperatures, ice may form on the cable, hindering proper cable movement and potentially preventing the door from latching. An unlatched sliding door could open while the vehicle is in motion, increasing the chance of injury to passengers.

Defect description:
Moisture entering the body lines between the power sliding door and outer door handle may leak onto the plastic boot protecting the outer door handle cable. When operating the outer door handle, the plastic boot can flex and form small gaps that allow for moisture intrusion. The moisture intrusion can freeze in low ambient temperature conditions, causing the outer door handle cable to stick in the open position, and restrict the front and rear latches from securely latching to the door strikers. An improperly latched power sliding door can unintentionally open during vehicle operation, increasing the risk of injury for occupants.
573.6(c)(6)
Chronology:
November 9, 2018
Honda filed a Defect Information Report (NHTSA Recall ID 18V-795) for power sliding doors opening while driving due to failure in the rear latch assembly.
January – February 2019
Honda received a report from the dealer technician hotline of a vehicle exhibiting similar symptoms even after the recall remedy for NHTSA Recall ID 18V-795 was performed. Honda
field personnel visited the dealer and noted the outer door handle cable was frozen. Honda
immediately launched an investigation, including the collection and analysis of parts returned from the field.
March 2019
The supplier for the outer door handle conducted testing and could not re-create the failure mode of a frozen outer door handle cable.
April – July 2019
Honda regularly meets with the supplier as part of the investigation. Additional testing was performed on field return parts, which did not reveal any deviation from design specifications.
September 2019 – July 2020
Since the testing concluded that field return parts met design specifications, Honda begins to investigate opportunity and likelihood for occurrences in the field, including further analysis of field return parts and Fault Tree Analysis verification. Based on these analyses, Honda
investigates whether modifications to the design specifications are appropriate.
July 21, 2020
Honda determined that a defect related to motor vehicle safety existed and decided to conduct a safety recall.
As of July 16, 2020, Honda has received 113 warranty claims, 31 field reports, and no reports of injuries or crashes related to this issue.
573.6(c)(8)(i)
Program for remedying the defect:
Registered owners of all affected vehicles will be contacted by mail and asked to take their vehicle to an authorized Honda dealer. The dealer will replace the power sliding door outer handle cables with redesigned cables for free.
573.6(c)(8)(ii)
The estimated date to start notification to dealers: July 29, 2020
The estimated date to start notifications to owners: September 23, 2020
573.6(c)(10)
Representative copies of all notices, bulletins and other communications:
A copy of the dealer service bulletin, the final customer notification letter, and other dealer communication will be submitted to your office as soon as possible.
A draft of the owner notification letter will be submitted to your office as soon as possible.
