AFFECTED VEHICLES
Year | Model | Trim | VIN Range |
2019- 20 | CR-V | ALL | Check the iN VIN status for eligibility. |
BACKGROUND
There were some rear subframe bolts that were improperly manufactured without a wax solution. If they loosen or fall off, the rear subframe may separate and may disable the vehicle, increasing the risk of a collision.
CUSTOMER NOTIFICATION
Owners of affected vehicles will be sent a notification of this campaign.
Do an iN VIN status inquiry to make sure the vehicle is shown as eligible.
Some vehicles affected by this campaign may be in your new or used vehicle inventory.
Failure to repair a vehicle subject to a recall or campaign may subject your dealership to claims or lawsuits from the customer or anyone else harmed as a result of such failure. To see if a vehicle in inventory is affected by this safety recall, do a VIN status inquiry before selling it.
CORRECTIVE ACTION
Inspect the front two bolts on the rear subframe. Based on the results, either replace the front two bolts or all four bolts on the rear subframe.

Estimado <First Name Last Name>,
For Immediate Release
Statement by American Honda Regarding Rear Subframe Bolt Recall:
2019-2020 Honda CR-V
- 358 vehicles are affected in the United States
- For Free: Replacement of certain rear subframe bolts; All subframe bolts will be tightened to the correct factory specification
- No reports of related crashes or injuries
TORRANCE, Calif. – Dec. 18, 2019 – American Honda will voluntarily recall 358 model-year 2019-2020 Honda
CR-V vehicles in the United States to inspect certain rear subframe bolts and, based on that inspection, replace some or all of those bolts, for free. Dealer technicians will tighten all subframe bolts to the correct factory specification. Bolts used to secure the rear subframe may lack a required wax coating, potentially allowing them to loosen over time. If a bolt loosens enough, the rear subframe may separate, which could increase the risk of a crash. Honda
discovered this issue during factory inspections, with no related reports of crashes or injuries.
Honda encourages each owner of an affected vehicle to schedule an inspection appointment with an authorized dealer as soon as they receive notification of this recall from Honda
. Mailed notification to owners will begin in mid-Jan. 2020. Owners of these models can also determine if their specific vehicles are included in the recall by visiting www.recalls.honda.com or by calling (888) 234-2138.

Defect description:
Improperly manufactured bolts that were not treated with a wax solution were used to secure the rear subframe to the vehicle. Bolts without the wax solution cannot achieve the targeted clamp load to properly secure the rear subframe. Over time, the rear subframe bolts could become unseated and allow for rear subframe separation. A separated rear subframe reduces vehicle handling and may disable the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
573.6(c)(6)
Chronology:
October 22, 2019
A Honda manufacturing facility detected rear subframe bolts that were not installed to specification. An investigation was immediately launched.
October 24, 2019
The rear subframe bolt supplier confirmed the suspect bolts could not achieve the targeted clamp load during installation; therefore, the minimum axial force required to secure the rear subframe bolts cannot be guaranteed.
November 12, 2019
The supplier confirmed that some rear subframe bolts from one specific production lot were not applied with a wax solution, which is used to improve lubrication between the thread and bearing seat to achieve the target clamp load.
November 28, 2019
Honda determined that a defect related to motor vehicle safety existed and decided to conduct a safety recall.
As of November 28, 2019, Honda has not received any warranty claims or field reports, nor any reports of crashes or injuries related to this issue.
573.6(c)(8)
Program for remedying the defect:
Registered owners of all affected vehicles will be contacted by mail and asked to take their vehicle to a Honda automobile dealer. If the front bolts on the rear subframe are torqued to specification, the front bolts on the rear subframe will be replaced and the rear bolts on the rear subframe will be torqued to specification, for free. If the front bolts on the rear subframe are not torqued to specification or are missing, then all rear subframe bolts will be replaced for free.
Because the new vehicle limited warranty on all affected vehicles would have provided a free repair for the problem addressed by this recall, without any payment by the owner, reimbursement for pre-notification repairs will not be offered.

Re: Stop Sale/Safety Recall: 2019-20 CR-V Rear Subframe Bolts
On December 5, 2019, American Honda notified NHTSA of a stop sale and safety recall for 358 units of 2019-2020 CR-Vs for
improperly manufactured bolts that were used to secure the rear subframe to the vehicle. Over time, the rear subframe
bolts could become unseated and allow for rear subframe separation. A separated rear subframe reduces vehicle
handling and may disable the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash. Refer to your eResponsibility report or do an iN VIN
status inquiry to determine which units in your inventory are affected.
Failure to repair a vehicle as necessary prior to sale may subject your dealership to claims or lawsuits.
BACKGROUND
During manufacturing, one specific production lot of rear subframe bolts were produced without a wax application.
Without a wax application, bolts may not operate as designed, potentially causing them to become loose and fall off
during vehicle operation.
REPAIR
All VINs will be inspected and, based on the inspection, will be repaired either by replacing the front bolts on the rear
subframe and ensuring all bolts are properly torqued, or by replacing both the front and rear bolts on the rear subframe.
American Honda expects very few vehicles will require the replacement of both the front and rear bolts.
PARTS
Due to the very limited scope of affected vehicles, a small number of dealers are impacted by this action. Affected
dealers will be allocated enough of the front bolts (2 per vehicle) to cover 100% of VINs for sold and unsold units. Affected
dealers will receive the front bolts by Saturday, December 7th via Daily Stock Order.
Due to the low expectation of both the front and rear bolts requiring replacement, if any rear bolts are required, or if
additional front bolts are needed, send requests to ahm_inflator_swap@ahm.honda.com. Provide VIN, Dealer #, part
number and quantities required. This ordering method will continue until parts supply stabilizes.
TOOLS
There are no special tools needed for this campaign.
