EDITOR’S NOTE: This article replaces “CVT Grinds or Won’t Move in Any Gear,” posted in May 2006.

Does the CVT grind or whine or not move in any gear? The problem could be stripped flywheel splines.

Follow these steps to check for and fix this problem:

  1. Hook up the HDS. Start the engine, shift into Drive, and monitor DRIVE PULLEY rpm in the Data List.
  2. Note the value and compare it to the one for ENGINE SPEED.
    • If the two values don’t match, the flywheel splines are damaged. Turn off the engine and disconnect the HDS. Go to step 3.
    • If the two values match, continue with normal troubleshooting.
  3. Remove the CVT from the vehicle. See the electronic service manual for details.

Important Tip: To remove the damaged flywheel, you must turn it on the drive pulley shaft to line up what’s left of its splines with the ones on the shaft. If you can’t line up the splines, you might need to remove the CVT housing and grab the shaft to keep it from turning.

  1. Reinstall the CVT with a new flywheel. See the electronic service manual for details.
