Misrouted Fuel Feed and Fuel Purge Hoses

The misrouting can cause the hoses to be damaged from contact with other components, potentially resulting in a fuel leak. A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source may increase the risk of a fire.

 

Summary

Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain 2017 Acura MDX Sport Hybrid vehicles.

The affected vehicles have an engine fuel feed hose and a fuel purge hose that may have been misrouted during vehicle assembly.

 

Remedy

Acura will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the routing of the fuel feed hose and the fuel purge hose.

If misrouted, the hoses will be replaced and installed correctly, free of charge.

BACKGROUND

During vehicle assembly, the factory may have routed the purge and fuel feed hose incorrectly.

 

CUSTOMER NOTIFICATION

Owners of affected vehicles will be sent a notification of this campaign.

Do an iN VIN status inquiry to make sure the vehicle is shown as eligible.

Some vehicles affected by this campaign may be in your new or used vehicle inventory. These vehicles must be repaired before they are sold.

Failure to repair a vehicle subject to a recall or campaign may subject your dealership to claims or lawsuits from the customer or anyone else harmed as a result of such failure. To see if a vehicle in inventory is affected by this safety recall, do a VIN status inquiry before selling it.

 

CORRECTIVE ACTION

Inspect the vehicle on the service drive. If the purge and fuel feed hose is misrouted, replace the hoses and route them correctly.

NOTE: A disconnected quick connect fitting can be reused, but the retainer on the mating line cannot be reused once it has been removed from the line. Replace the retainer only if needed.

INSPECTION PROCEDURE

NOTE: This inspection can be done on the service drive.

  1. Open the hood and remove the engine cover.
  2. Check if the purge and fuel feed hose is routed underneath the breather pipe and not above it.

Is the fuel feed hose and purge hose routed underneath the breather pipe?

Yes – The vehicle is okay, install the engine cover.

No – Go to REPAIR PROCEDURE.

 

REPAIR PROCEDURE

  1. Remove the engine cover.
  2. Disconnect and remove the purge hose.

  1. Relieve the fuel pressure using the i-HDS.
  2. Remove the fuel hose cover.
  3. Remove the quick connect fitting cover on the frame side, then disconnect the quick connect fuel line.

NOTE: A disconnected quick connect fitting can be reused, but the retainer on the mating line cannot be reused once it has been removed from the line. Replace the retainer only if needed.

  1. Remove the fuel feed hose quick connect fitting cover on the engine side, then disconnect the fuel line.

  1. Install the new purge and fuel hoses in reverse order of removal. Make sure the hoses are routed underneath the breather pipe.
  2. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode (but do not start the engine). The fuel pump runs for about 2 seconds, and fuel pressure rises. Repeat this two or three times, then make sure there are no fuel leaks.
  3. Install the engine cover.
  4. For California residents only: Fill out a Vehicle Emissions Recall – Proof of Correction certificate, and use KF8 as the recall number. Give the certificate to your customer, and advise him or her to keep it as proof that the recall was completed. Your customer will need to submit this certificate to the DMV only if the DMV requests it. If you need more certificates, use reorder number Y0657.
