Honda

Motor Co.) is recalling certain 2023 Civic Type R vehicles. The driver’s seat frame may not have been welded properly, which can cause the seat cushion frame to break. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 207, “Seating Systems.”
Remedy
Dealers will replace the front driver seat cushion frame assembly, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed May 10, 2023. Owners may contact Honda
customer service at 1-888-234-2138. Honda’s number for this recall is TDY.

BACKGROUND
During manufacturing, the driver seat cushion frame assembly may have been improperly welded. An improperly welded seat frame may not hold the seat in position. In the event of a collision, the seat may not properly restrain the occupant, increasing the risk of injury.
CUSTOMER NOTIFICATION
Owners of affected vehicles will be sent a notification of this campaign.
Do an iN VIN status inquiry to make sure the vehicle is shown as eligible.
Some vehicles affected by this campaign may be in your new or used vehicle inventory.
Failure to repair a vehicle subject to a recall or campaign may subject your dealership to claims or lawsuits from the customer or anyone else harmed as a result of such failure. Before selling a vehicle in inventory, always check if it is affected by a safety recall by conducting a VIN status inquiry.
CORRECTIVE ACTION
Replace the driver’s seat cushion frame.

REPAIR PROCEDURE
1. Raise the driver’s lower seat cushion to highest position.
2. Disconnect 12-volt battery negative terminal.
NOTE: Wait at least 3 minutes after disconnecting the 12-volt battery negative terminal.
3. Remove the retaining screw for the manual height adjuster lever.
4. With the seat back adjuster lever raised, remove the access panel and pull the front and rear cover to disconnect the clips and locking tabs.
5. Remove the seat back adjuster lever.
NOTE: Using a shop towel wrapped around the lever, grab each end of the towel and pull the towel hard to remove the lever cover.
6. Adjust the front driver’s seat to the most forward position until the rail bolts are fully visible, then remove the bolts. Use TORX Plus Socket Driver 50IP.
7. Adjust the front driver’s seat to the most rearward position until the rail bolts are fully visible, then remove the bolts. Use TORX Plus Socket Driver 50IP.
8. Carefully and slowly tilt back the seat assembly to expose the harness and connectors.
9. Disconnect each connector clip as shown below.
10. Carefully remove the front driver’s seat from the vehicle and place it on a clean workspace.
NOTE: Use a protective mat over the door panel to avoid any damage during the seat removal.
11. Remove the two screws and remove the height adjuster lever.
12. Remove the outboard frame cover.
13. Remove the three 5×10 screws holding the driver’s seat anchor wire to the seat frame.
14. Tilt the seat onto the back panel (making sure it is protected from the work surface), exposing the underside of the lower cushion.
15. Remove the inner and outer seat rail covers.
16. Remove the inboard seat recline cover.
17. Tilt the seat onto the back panel (making sure it is protected from the work surface), exposing the underside of the lower cushion.
18. Release the hooks securing the pad and seat cover to the lower seat frame, remove and set aside.
19. With the pad and cover released from the frame, work from the top side and push out the clips holding the harness to the seat pan, making note of their location and routing orientation.
NOTE: Pushing the clips from the top of the pan while squeezing them will reduce damage.
20. Remove the front seat belt buckle and make note of the wave washer location.
NOTE: Upon replacement of the buckle, replace the 7/16” flange nut and torque to 35 N·m (26 lb-ft).
21. Remove the four 10×16 flange bolts to separate the lower frame from the seat back frame. When reassembling torque bolts to 47 N·m (35 lb-ft). After releasing the SRS (yellow) harness from the lower pan, carefully move the harness away from the lower seat frame.
22. Remove the seat cushion spring and reinstall to the new frame.
NOTE: Take care while performing this task as many sharp exposed edges exist.
23. Install all parts in the reverse order of removal.
24. Torque the front and rear seat mounting bolts in sequence to 43 N·m (32 lb-ft).
25. Reconnect the 12-volt battery negative terminal.
26. Calibrate the driver’s seat position sensor.
26.1. Make sure the driver’s seat is in the full forward position.
26.2. Select the following menu buttons on the HDS screen in sequence.

26.3. Using two pieces of tape, make alignment marks on the recline cover and the front door sill trim as shown.The driver’s seat position sensor should read NEAR on the HDS.
26.4. Move the seat back in small increments (about 5mm (0.20 in) until the driver’s seat position sensor reads NOT-NEAR on the HDS. The measurement should be about 55mm (2.017 in) from the full forward position.
NOTE: It takes a few seconds for the HDS to change display, so wait for about 5 seconds between each movement. If the driver’s seat position sensor data does not work as described above, check the driver’s seat position sensor for damage and replace parts as needed.
26.5. The vehicle is in OFF (LOCK) mode.
27. Confirm the seat operation by moving the driver’s seat and the seat back through their full range of movement.Make sure the harnesses are not pinched or interfering with other parts.
28. Do an SRS operation confirmation by turning the vehicle to the ON mode and checking that the SRS indicator comes on for about 6 seconds and then goes off.

Honda determined that a defect related to motor vehicle safety and a FMVSS noncompliance existed and decided to conduct a safety and noncompliance recall.
As of March 23, 2023, Honda has received 4 warranty claims related to the issue and no reports of injuries or deaths related to this issue.

This notice is sent to you in accordance with the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act. Honda has decided that certain 2023 model
year Honda Civic Type R vehicles fail to conform to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 207, “Seating Systems.”
Why my vehicle is under recall: Due to an insufficient driver seat frame weld, the seat’s cushion frame may break. A broken seat
cushion frame may not adequately restrain the driver during a crash, increasing the risk of an
injury.

Re: Stop Sale/Safety Recall : 2023 Civic Type R Driver Seat Frame
On March 30, 2023, American Honda notified NHTSA of a stop sale and safety recall for certain model year 2023 Civic
Type R units due improper manufacturing of the driver seat cushion frame assembly. In the event of a collision, the seat
may not properly restrain the occupant, increasing the risk of injury. Refer to your eResponsibility report or perform
an iN VIN status inquiry to determine which units in your inventory are affected.
Failure to repair a vehicle as necessary prior to sale may subject your dealership to claims or lawsuits.
BACKGROUND
During manufacturing, the driver seat cushion frame assembly may have been improperly welded . An improperly welded
seat frame may not hold the seat in position during a collision preventing the occupant from being properly restrained.

Honda identified an issue in the supplier’s welding robot teaching procedure. March 23, 2023
Honda determined that a defect related to motor vehicle safety and a FMVSS noncompliance existed and decided to conduct a safety and noncompliance recall. As of March 23, 2023, Honda has received 4 warranty claims related to the issue and no reports of injuries or deaths related to this issue.
Description of Remedy :
Description of Remedy Program : Registered owners of all affected vehicles will be contacted by mail and
asked to take their vehicle to an authorized Honda dealer. The dealer will replace the front driver seat cushion frame assembly with a non-defective part.
Owners who have paid to have these repairs completed at their own expense will be eligible for reimbursement, in accord with the recall reimbursement plan on file with NHTSA.
