Production Dates : SEP 01, 2022 – SEP 01, 2022 VIN Range 1 : Begin : NR End : NR Not sequential Description of Defect : Description of the Defect : According to Part 573 DIR notification 22T-021 filed by Bridgestone Americas Tire Operations, LLC (BATO), BATO has determined that the tires equipped on a small number of Acura TLX vehicles may have sustained cuts/tears to the bead area during their tire sorting and loading process. The cuts/tears can expose body ply cords or bead wires, which could cause the tire to lose air or lead to damage within the tire. FMVSS 1 : NR FMVSS 2 : NR Description of the Safety Risk : According to Part 573 DIR notification 22T-021 filed by BATO, if the tire sustained cuts/tears to the bead area, over time air and moisture could damage the tire’s belts or bead wires. As a result, the tire could deflate rapidly, potentially leading to a loss of vehicle control, increasing the risk of a crash or injury. Description of the Cause : According to Part 573 DIR notification 22T-021 filed by BATO, a protective plastic “shoe”, at the base of a robotic arm used to unstack tires (depalletizer), rotated out of position. This exposed a sharp edge on the robotic arm of the depalletizer to the inside of certain tires. The bead areas of a small quantity of tires may have been cut by this edge during the unstacking process. Vehicles equipped with a Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) may detect and notify drivers of a loss of tire air pressure at higher-than-normal rates. If undetected, damage could progress over time and tires could exhibit noise, vibration, handling disturbance, sidewall bulges, and/or irregular tread wear. Only one of the returned tires was found to have damage. November 1, 2022 Honda was informed by BATO certain tires for the 2022 Acura TLX may have damage to the bead area caused by the shipping/loading process and BATO intends to conduct a recall with NHTSA. November 3, 2022 BATO notifies NHTSA of a potential tire defect involving Honda vehicles (22T-021). November 28, 2022 Honda met with NHTSA to discuss defect notification 22T-021 and Honda’s intent to file a Part 573 DIR on the issue. Part 573 Safety Recall Report 22V-950 Page 3 The information contained in this report was submitted pursuant to 49 CFR §573 December 2, 2022 Honda confirmed the VIN range of 2022 TLX vehicles which may have been equipped with the recalled tires. December 15, 2022 Honda determined that a defect related to motor vehicle safety existed and decided to conduct a safety recall. As of December 15, 2022, Honda has not received any warranty claims, field reports, nor reports of injuries or crashes related to this issue. Description of Remedy : Description of Remedy Program : Registered owners of all affected vehicles will be contacted by mail and asked to take their vehicle to an authorized Acura dealer. The dealer will inspect all 4 tires and, if a tire is within the affected date range, replace it with a new tire. Owners who have paid to have these repairs completed at their own expense will be eligible for reimbursement, in accord with the recall reimbursement plan on file with NHTSA. How Remedy Component Differs from Recalled Component : Recalled tires may contain a cut/tear in the bead area of the tire. The remedy tires will not contain the potential bead cut/tear.
