The Service Bulletin supporting a SAFETY RECALL on CERTAIN 2019-2020 CBR500XA/CBR500RA
vehicles to inspect, and replace if necessary, the ABS Modulator is now available on iN.
Service Bulletin MULTIPLE MODEL: CB/CBR500 #1, which includes all the information relating to this Safety Recall, can be found by navigating to Service>Service Publications>Service Bulletins on iN.
If a repair is required, parts will be available through the normal parts ordering process.
Make sure all departments in your dealership are aware of this Safety Recall.

Dear Honda Powersports Dealer:
STOP SALE NOTICE: 2019-2020 CB500XA/CBR500RA ABS MODULATOR INSPECTION RECALL
Honda is issuing a STOP SALE NOTICE on CERTAIN 2019-2020 CBR500XA/CBR500RA vehicles to inspect the ABS Modulator for a potential defect that might cause the vehicle to increase front brake lever stroke and decrease the braking force.
Effective immediately, you MUST NOT SELL any affected NEW or USED 2019-2020 CB500XA/CBR500RA
vehicle until it is inspected, and repaired (if needed), according to the associated Service Bulletin.
AFFECTED UNITS:
CERTAIN NEW or USED 2019-2020 CB500XA/CBR500RA. To search for applicable recalls on a specific unit, you MUST use Unit Information on iN. To manage your affected inventory, use you dealer eResponsibility Report on iN.
SERVICE BULLETIN
Service Bulletin Multiple Model: CB/CBR500 #1, which includes all of the information relating to this Safety Recall, will be available on iN by end of business Friday, September 10, 2021.
PARTS INFORMATION
Parts need for inspection and repair (if needed) can be ordered according to the instructions in the forthcoming Service Bulletin.
CUSTOMER NOTIFICATION
American Honda intends to mail customer letters to all owners of affected 2019-2020 CB500XA/CBR500RA vehicles in October 2021. Customers will be informed that their vehicle may be affected by a safety related defect and will be advised to make an appointment with an authorized Honda dealer for inspection, and repair (if needed).
Make sure all departments in your dealership are aware of this Safety Recall.

The production range reflects all possible vehicles that could experience the problem. Vehicles produced outside the specified range were equipped with Anti-lock Braking System (ABS)modulators assembled with the appropriate amount of grease. After continued use, foreign matter may adhere to the grease, which can be pinched in the check valve during braking and cause brake fluid to leak. If this occurs, the braking distance (without ABS activation) will increase, increasing the risk of a crash. 573.6(c)(6) Chronology: February – March 2021 Honda recalled certain 2020MY CRF1100A/D motorcycles globally for ABS modulators assembled with excessive grease. The U.S. market was not affected by this recall and NHTSA was notified in a Foreign Recall Notice (21F-022) submitted pursuant to 49 CFR 579.12. In parallel with the foreign recall, Honda continued its investigation into the impact of excessive grease application to the ABS modulator installed on other motorcycles as it was a common component and there was a report from the Italian market of a different motorcycle model with a similar complaint of reduced braking performance. April – August 2021 Honda continued its investigation of several motorcycle models and the impact of excessive grease application on non-ABS braking performance. Based on certain characteristics such as vehicle weight, whether the excessive grease was applied to front or rear brake oil passages on the ABS modulator, and brake disc/caliper specifications, Honda confirmed the non-ABS braking performance for one family of motorcycles did not meet internal specifications. August 26, 2021 Honda determined that a defect related to motor vehicle safety existed and decided to conduct a safety recall. As of August 26, 2021, Honda has not received any warranty claims, field reports, or reports of crashes or injuries related to this issue for the US market. 573.6(c)(8)(i) Program for remedying the defect: Registered owners of all affected vehicles will be contacted by mail and asked to bring their vehicle to an authorized Honda Powersports dealer. The dealer will visually inspect the lot number on the ABS modulator and replace affected ABS modulators for free. Owners who have paid to have these repairs completed at their own expense will be eligible for reimbursement, in accord with the recall reimbursement plan on file with NHTSA. 573.6(c)(8)(ii) The notification date to dealers: September 1, 2021 The estimated date to start notifications to owners: October 29, 2021 573.6(c)(10) Representative copies of all notices, bulletins and other communications: A copy of the dealer service bulletin, the final customer notification letter and other dealer communication will be submitted to your office as soon as possible. November 2021 NHTSA Recall 21V-690 IMPORTANT SAFETY RECALL This notice applies to your vehicle: Dear Honda Powersports Customer: This notice is sent to you in accordance with the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act. WHAT IS THE REASON FOR THIS NOTICE? Honda has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain 2019 – 2020 model year CB500X ABS and CBR500R ABS motorcycles. Excessive grease was applied to the O-ring of the reservoir piston in the ABS modulator. After continued use, the grease can become contaminated and cause brake fluid to leak. If this occurs, the braking distance (without ABS activation) can increase, increasing the risk of a crash or injury. WHAT WILL HONDA DO? The dealer will inspect the ABS modulator’s lot number and replace affected ABS modulators for free. WHAT SHOULD YOU DO? Please call any authorized Honda Powersports dealer and make an appointment to have the ABS modulator inspected and, if necessary, replaced with a new modulator for free. Once you schedule an appointment for your motorcycle, be advised that the inspection process may take approximately 30 minutes and the replacement may take over 2 ½ hours. However, your dealer can provide you with a better estimate of the overall time for this service visit, as it may be necessary to make your motorcycle available for a longer period of time. If you are not the only rider of this motorcycle, please advise all other riders and passengers of this important safety information.
