Version 2
Safety Recall: Third Row Accessory Power Outlet
Supersedes 20-012, Dated February 7, 2020, to revise the information highlighted in yellow.
AFFECTED VEHICLES
| Year | Model | Trim | VIN Range |
| 2018-20 | Odyssey | EX-L, EX-L with Navigation and RES, Touring, and Elite | Check the iN VIN status for eligibility. |
REVISION SUMMARY
The CORRECTIVE ACTION was updated, and an image in the REPAIR PROCEDURE section was revised.
BACKGROUND
The routing for the third row seat accessory power outlet wiring harness may allow for pinching of the harness between the unibody and the rear trim panel. If the pinching damages and exposes the copper wire to the unibody, an electrical short could occur. An intermittent electrical short could overheat the wiring harness, increasing the risk of a fire.
CUSTOMER NOTIFICATION
Owners of affected vehicles will be sent a notification of this campaign.
Do an iN VIN status inquiry to make sure the vehicle is shown as eligible.
Some vehicles affected by this campaign may be in your new or used vehicle inventory.
Failure to repair a vehicle subject to a recall or campaign may subject your dealership to claims or lawsuits from the customer or anyone else harmed as a result of such failure. To see if a vehicle in inventory is affected by this safety recall, do a VIN status inquiry before selling it.
CORRECTIVE ACTION
Inspect the third row seat accessory power outlet branch of the wiring harness between the C-pillar trim and the third row accessory power socket connector for any damage that has exposed the copper wire. If copper wire is not exposed, wrap the branch with electrical tape, and install the new floor harness clip and moonroof drain tube clip. Then route the third row accessory power socket harness branch and the rear entertainment harness (if equipped) behind the floor harness and the moonroof drain tube.
If copper wire is exposed, contact Tech Line to review for possible floor harness replacement.
NOTE
A very small number of floor harnesses will require replacement. New harnesses will include an updated clip.

IMPORTANT SAFETY RECALL
This notice applies to your vehicle: XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Dear <First Name Last Name>,
This notice is sent to you in accordance with the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act.
WHAT IS THE REASON FOR THIS NOTICE?
Honda
has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in all 2018–2019 and certain 2020 model year Odyssey EX-L, Odyssey Touring, and Odyssey Elite vehicles. During factory installation of the rear trim panel, the electrical wiring for the third row seat accessory power socket could get pinched between the rear trim panel and metal body of the vehicle. If the pinching damages and exposes the electrical wiring, contact with the metal body would cause a short circuit. A short circuit could overheat the electrical wiring and its plastic components, increasing the risk of a fire.
WHAT WILL HONDA
DO?
The dealer will inspect the third row seat accessory power socket for exposed electrical wiring. If the electrical wiring is not exposed, the electrical wiring will be reinforced with protective tape and re-routed to prevent pinching, for free. If the electrical wiring is exposed, the electrical wiring will be replaced and re-routed for free.
WHAT SHOULD YOU DO?
Please call any authorized Honda
dealer and make an appointment to have your vehicle’s electrical wiring for the third row seat accessory power socket inspected for free. Once you make an appointment to repair your vehicle, be advised that the total inspection process may take approximately 45 minutes. If the electrical wiring needs replacement, your vehicle must remain at the dealer for at least a full day. However, your dealer can provide you with a better estimate of the overall time for this service visit, as it may be necessary to make your vehicle available for a longer period of time. If you are not the only driver of this vehicle, please advise all other drivers and passengers of this important information.

¿CUÁL ES EL MOTIVO DE ESTA NOTIFICACIÓN?
Honda
Chronology:
August 2018
Honda
received notice of an alleged fire (first reported incident) from the vehicle owner via the customer contact center. The vehicle owner confirmed their auto insurance carrier had taken possession of the vehicle and were handling their claim. Honda
informed the vehicle owner to provide any relevant information to Honda
for review; however, no information was received from the vehicle owner and the case was closed.
April-May 2019
Honda
received notice of an alleged fire (second reported incident) from an authorized dealer. An investigation was launched and the vehicle was inspected at the authorized dealer.
Honda
also contacted the auto insurance carrier that settled the fire claim from the first reported incident to obtain additional information and schedule a vehicle inspection.
July 2019
Honda
repurchased the vehicle involved in the second reported incident from the vehicle owner. A comprehensive investigation was launched to determine the root cause of the fire.
August 2019
Honda
inspected the vehicle involved in the first reported incident at the auto insurance carrier’s salvage lot to determine the root cause of the fire.
November 2019
Honda
received notice of an alleged fire (third reported incident) and the vehicle was repurchased from the vehicle owner. A comprehensive investigation was launched to determine the root cause of the fire.
December 2019
Internal investigation of the three reported fires and re-creation testing concluded that the fires were the result of a damaged accessory power outlet wire harness which generated an electrical short. If the electrical short is intermittent, the current would not exceed the fuse’s amperage, allowing the wire harness to overheat and combust.
January 30, 2020
Honda
determined that a defect related to motor vehicle safety existed and decided to conduct a safety recall.
As of January 30, 2020, Honda
has received three warranty claims, fivefield reports, three reports of fires, and no reports of injuries related to this issue.

Re: Stop Sale/Safety Recall: 2018-2020 Odyssey Third-Row Accessory Power Outlet Wire Harness
On February 6, 2020, American Honda
notified NHTSA of a stop sale and safety recall for certain 2018-2020
Odyssey vehicles due to potentially damaged power outlet wiring harnesses in the third-row seating area that could
cause a fire. Refer to your eResponsibility report or do an iN VIN status inquiry to determine which
units in your inventory are affected.
Failure to repair a vehicle as necessary prior to sale may subject your dealership to claims or lawsuits.
BACKGROUND
The routing for the third-row seat accessory power outlet wiring harness may allow for pinching of the harness
between the metal body and the rear trim panel. If the pinching damages and exposes the wires to the body, an
electrical short could occur. An intermittent electrical short could overheat the wiring harness, increasing the risk of
a fire.
REPAIR
All vehicles require inspection of the wiring harness for any damage. If copper wiring is not exposed, the harness
will be reinforced with electrical tape and rerouted to prevent future damage. If any copper wiring is exposed, the
wiring harness will be replaced. American Honda
expects a very small number of wiring harnesses will require
replacement.
PARTS
Initial repair kits have been shipped to your dealership to allow for immediate repairs. These shipments will start
arriving at dealerships via Daily Stock Order on Friday, February 7th. Additional repair kits are available through
normal parts ordering.
TOOLS
There are no special tools needed for this campaign.

TORRANCE, Calif. – Feb. 11, 2020 – American Honda
will voluntarily recall approximately 241,000 model-year 2018-2020 Honda
Odyssey EX-L, Touring and Elite minivans in the United States to inspect, reroute and wrap in insulating tape the wire harness leading to the third-row accessory power outlet. If the wire harness is found to be damaged, it will be replaced, for free.
The wire harness leading to the third-row accessory power outlet may have been damaged when the interior panel covering the harness was installed, pinching it between the panel and the metal vehicle body. If the wire harness was damaged, a short circuit can occur, heating the plastic harness cover and potentially leading to a fire. Honda
is aware of three fires related to this issue with no reported injuries.
Honda
is announcing this recall to encourage each owner of an affected vehicle to take it to an authorized dealer as soon as they receive notification of this recall from Honda
. Mailed notification to owners will begin in mid-March 2020. Owners of these models can also determine if their specific vehicles are included in the recall by visiting www.recalls.honda
