DIAGNOSIS AND REPAIR PROCEDURE

Check the iN VIN status to see if the vehicle is eligible for S/B 15-060, Safety Recall: Ignition Coils. Is the vehicle eligible for recall?

.

Vehicles Eligible for Recall

  1. Record what cylinder the misfire is on. Let the vehicle cool down to room temperature.
  2. Swap the ignition coil and spark plug of the misfiring cylinder to one of the other cylinders in order to see if the misfire moves. (For example: If the misfire is on cylinder 1, swap ignition coil 1 and 2, then swap spark plug 1 and 3.)  Refer to the ignition coil and spark plug removal and installation procedure in the service information.
  3. Let the vehicle idle to see if the misfire moves.
    • If the misfire moved with the ignition coil, do S/B 15-060. The repair is complete.
    • If the misfire moved with the spark plug, replace the affected spark plug. Refer to the ignition coil and spark plug removal and installation procedure in the service information. Then do S/B 15-060. The repair is complete.
    • If the misfire did not move, go to step 5.
    • If the misfire did not return, go to step 4.
  4. Test-drive the vehicle at low speed with low accelerator input (preferably on a slight uphill incline). Did the misfire return? (Check for pending DTCs)
    • If the misfire returned, go to step 5.
    • If the misfire did not return, this bulletin does not apply. Do S/B 15-060, then continue with normal misfire troubleshooting.
  5. Replace the fuel injectors. Refer to the injector removal and installation procedure in the service information.
  6. Do S/B 15-060. The repair is complete.

NOTE: In some rare cases the vehicle may return, at which point check and adjust the valves.

.

Vehicles Not Eligible for Recall or Recall is Complete

  1. Record what cylinder the misfire is on. Let the vehicle cool down to room temperature.
  2. Swap the ignition coil and spark plug of the misfiring cylinder to one of the other cylinders in order to see if the misfire moves. (For example: If the misfire is on cylinder 1, swap ignition coil 1 and 2 then swap spark plug 1 and 3.)  Refer to the ignition coil and spark plug removal and installation procedure in the service information.
  3. Let the vehicle idle to see if the misfire moves.
    • If the misfire moved, replace the affected ignition coil or spark plug. Refer to the ignition coil and spark plug removal and installation procedure in the service information.
Continue with normal misfire troubleshooting.
  5. Replace the fuel injectors. Refer to the injector removal and installation procedure in the service information. The repair is complete.
