REVISION SUMMARY
The Mongoose Pro Interface tool had been superseded to the Mongoose Plus 2 Interface Tool; both units support this product update. Tool and software information, as well as updated images reflecting the new software have been added. American Honda recommends you read this entire bulletin.
BACKGROUND
When a failure is detected, the EPS control unit goes into back-up mode. The new software provides partial assist during back-up mode.
CUSTOMER NOTIFICATION
Owners of affected vehicles have been sent a notification of this campaign.
Do an iN VIN status inquiry to make sure the vehicle is shown as eligible.
Some vehicles affected by this campaign may be in your used vehicle inventory. Repair these vehicles before they are sold.
CORRECTIVE ACTION
Use the i-HDS and the Mongoose Pro / Plus Honda Interface Tool to update the EPS software.

BEFORE GETTING STARTED
NOTE:
• Connect a fully charged jumper battery to the vehicle and leave it connected during the entire procedure to maintain steady voltage.
• Never turn the ignition to OFF or ACCESSORY. If there is a problem with the update, leave the ignition turned to ON.
• To prevent EPS control unit damage, do not operate anything electrical (headlights, audio system, brakes, A/C, power windows, door locks, etc.) during the update.
DIAGNOSIS
Connect the i-HDS and check for DTCs in the EPS system.
• If DTC 53-01 torque sensor (low/high check) or DTC 53-02 torque sensor (average check) is stored, complete this bulletin and refer to SB 15-056, Warranty Extension: EPS Torque Sensor (DTC 53-01 or DTC 53-02) to replace the steering gear box.
• If DTC 53-01 or DTC 53-02 is not stored, go to REPAIR PROCEDURE.
REPAIR PROCEDURE
Updating the EPS with the Mongoose Pro / Plus Honda Interface Tool.
NOTE:
• Make sure you have the latest software loaded to your PC. Run the Honda Download Manager to confirm the latest software.
• During the software update, DO NOT turn off the ignition to OFF. Doing so during the update will damage the control unit.
1. Connect a jumper battery to the vehicle and leave it connected during the entire procedure to maintain a steady voltage.
2. Connect the Mongoose Pro / Plus Honda Interface Tool between the PC and the vehicle’s DLC.
3. Select the EPS Rewrite Icon on your PC.

4. Select I Agree.
5. Select Next in the Pass-thru Device Selection screen.
NOTE: If you are using the Mongoose Plus Interface Tool, be sure to select “Drew Technologies, Inc. MongoosePro Honda2” or the interface tool will not connect.

6. Select Start.
7. Select Connect.

8. You will see the Communication with the Vehicle screen.
9. Wait for the EPS Update Information screen to appear. Select Yes. The update will start and the screen will show a loading bar.

10. Turn the ignition to OFF, then to ON within 60 seconds to complete the updating procedure
11. The EPS Update Successful screen appears. Select Complete, then disconnect the Mongoose Pro / Plus Honda Interface Tool.

What is the Product Update issue?

The Electric Power Steering (EPS) torque sensor in a small number of 2013 Accord and 2014 Accord Plug-in
vehicles may contain a manufacturing defect. If the EPS control unit detects a torque sensor failure, it is
programmed to generate an error code and will disable the power-assist. A software update is available which will
allow the control unit to allow partial power steering assist in the event of a torque sensor failure.
What is the Warranty Extension issue?
To ensure your confidence in our product, American Honda is extending the warranty on the torque sensor in the
EPS system to 5 years from the original date of purchase with no mileage limit. This Warranty Extension only
provides coverage for EPS torque sensor failures that result in Diagnostic Trouble Code DTC53-01 or 53-02 being
stored.
The Warranty Extension is valid except for any vehicle that has been declared a total loss or sold for salvage by a
financial institution or insurer, or has a branded or similar title under any state’s law.
What should you do?
For the Product Update: Contact your Honda dealer to schedule an appointment to have your vehicle updated with
the new software. During the EPS software update procedure, the technician will check if OTC 53-01 or 53-02 have
been set. If these DTCs are set on the vehicle, the power steering gear box will be replaced free of charge. Please
plan to leave your vehicle at the dealer for one full day to allow them flexibility in scheduling.
For the Warranty Extension: If you experience a loss of steering assistance, bring your vehicle to any Honda dealer
for an inspection. In cases where OTC 53-01 or 53-02 is set, your Honda dealer will replace the EPS steering
gearbox.

What to do if you feel this notice is in error
Our records show that you are the current owner or lessee of a 2013 Accord or 2014 Accord Plug-in involved in this
warranty extension. If this is not the case, or the name/address information is not correct, please fill out and return
the enclosed, postage-paid Information Change Card. We will then update our records.

lCual es el proposito de la actualizaci6n del producto?
El sensor de torsion de la direccion electrica asistida (EPS) en una reducida cantidad de vehiculos modelo Accord 2013 y
Accord Plug-in 2014 pueden contener un defecto de fabricaci6n. Si la unidad de control EPS detecta una falla en el sensor
de torsion, la unidad esta programada para generar un c6digo de error e inhabilitara la asistencia electrica. Una
actualizacion del programa esta disponible la cual permitira que la unidad de control permita asistencia parcial a la
servodireccion en el caso de un falla del sensor de torsion.
lCual es el prop6sito de la extension de garantia?
Para asegurar su confianza en nuestro producto, American Honda esta extendiendo la garantia en el sensor de torsion en
el sistema EPS a 5 afios a partir de la fecha original de compra, sin limite de millas. Esta extension de garantia solamente
brinda cobertura para las fallas del sensor de torsion del EPS que resultan en el codigo de problema de diagnostico
DTC53-01 o 53-02 registrado.
La extension de garantia es valida excepto para cualquier vehiculo que se haya declarado como perdida total o vendido
como chatarra por una institucion financiera o compafiia de seguro, o sobre el que se haya emitido un titulo de mercancia
averiada o similar conforms a las leyes de cualquier estado.
lQue debe hacer?
Para la actualizacion del producto: Comuniquese con su concesionario Honda para programar una cita para actualizar su
vehiculo con el nuevo programa. Durante el procedimiento de la actualizacion del programa del EPS, un tecnico verificara
si el c6digo DTC 53-01 o 53-02 se han generado. Si estos codigos OTC se han generado en el vehiculo, la caja de
engranajes de la direccion electrica asistida sera reemplazada sin costo alguno. Por favor haga planes para dejar su
vehiculo en el concesionario por un dia completo, para permitirles flexibilidad en la programacion.
Para la extension de garantia: Si su vehiculo experimenta una perdida de asistencia de la direccion, lleve su vehiculo a
cualquier concesionario Honda para una inspeccion. En casos que los c6digos OTC 53-01 o 53-02 se generen, su
concesionario HONDA reemplazara la caja de engranajes de la direcci6n EPS.

You may be eligible for reimbursement if you meet all of these requirements:
• You paid to have the power steering gear box replaced (with DTC 53-01 or DTC 53-02 stored) prior to receiving
this notice.
• The repair was completed before the date of this notice. Repairs made after the notice date must be
performed by a Honda dealer.
• You owned the vehicle at the time ofrepair. You are still eligible if you no longer own the vehicle.
• You provide a paid invoice.
Please complete this form and attach the items listed below. Failure to include all requested information will result
in delays and possible denial of your request.
Your invoice must include:
1. Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)
2. Name and address of the repair facility
3. Itemized cost of repair – parts and labor
4. Date the work was completed
5. Proof of Payment – copy of the canceled check, bank statement, or credit card receipt showing that you paid for
the repair. Cash payments must be documented on the invoice.
