Front Brakes Squeal at Low Mileage

EDITOR’S NOTE: This article revises the one posted in August 2015. Changes are highlighted in yellow.

Do you have a vehicle in for squealing front brakes with just 2,000 to 4,000 miles on the odometer? Out-of-spec front brake discs may be the culprit.

The original front brake discs weren’t cast to spec, which caused brake squeal at low mileage. To address this concern, the supplier remade the mold so it met the spec. Brake discs from this new mold then became the factory install and service parts.

Keep in mind this new brake disc has the same part number as the original (P/N 45251-TX4-A01). Fortunately, it’s easy to tell them apart.

First, look at the machining lot number stamped on the wheel hub. A new brake disc is dated 05/27/15 or later.

Next, look at the casting core number in the vent slots. A new brake disc reads 11, 12, 13, or 14

So, here’s the bottom line. If you get a vehicle in for this concern, first check to see if it has the original front brake discs or the new ones.

If it has the originals, then order the new brake discs along with new brake pads. The new brake discs offer quieter braking. If it already has the new brake discs, then continue with normal brake system troubleshooting.
