Roof Rack Rattles

SYMPTOM

There is a rattle coming from the roof rack area.

 

POSSIBLE CAUSES

There is too much clearance in the roof rack cross bar.

 

CORRECTIVE ACTION

Apply anti-rattle tape to the right side of each roof rack cross bar.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

1. Remove the rear cross bar (4 bolts).

 

2. Remove the front cross bar (4 bolts).

 

3. On the rear cross bar, remove the 2 torx bolts from the right cross bar end. Then, remove the cross bar end.

 

4. Apply 1 square of anti-rattle tape to the end of the right cross bar, as shown.

 

5. Reinstall the cross bar end and torque the new Torx bolts to 4-5 N·m (2.9-3.6 lb-ft).

 

6. Repeat steps 3 thru 5 on the front cross bar.
7. Install the cross bars and torque the bolts to 10 N·m (7.3 lb-ft).
