Transmission Slips or Shifts Hard When Cold

Supersedes 15-021, dated April 14, 2015, to revise the information highlighted in yellow

REVISON SUMMARY

Under WARRANTY CLAIM INFORMATION, Defect Code Number was updated.

 

SYMPTOM

The 8-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT) slips or shifts hard when cold, usually on 1st to 2nd upshifts. The client may also report about feeling bumped or jerked once the vehicle has come to a stop. After the transmission warms up, it shifts normally.

 

POSSIBLE CAUSE

The PCM settings, along with the odd and even clutches having not been properly broken in.

 

CORRECTIVE ACTION

Update the PCM  A/T software and do the clutch break-in procedure twice.

 

SOFTWARE INFORMATION

NOTE: Unnecessary or incorrect repairs resulting from a failure to update the HDS or MVCI are not covered under warranty.

MVCI Control Module (CM) Update:
Application Version 3.01.40 or later
Database update 17-Mar-2015 or later

HDS Software Version:
3.016.018 or later

Before beginning the repair, make sure that both the HDS and MVCI are updated as listed above.

Do only the update listed in this service bulletin.

Check that the MVCI indicates the applicable program ID listed below (or a later program ID) as the Available Update when the update begins.

If the MVCI displays This vehicle does not need an update at this time during the update, the software for this  bulletin is already installed.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

  1. Update the PCM A/T software with the MVCI. Refer to Service Bulletin 01-026, Updating Control Units/Modules.
  2. Make sure vehicle is on a flat surface, the parking brake is applied, and all electrical loads are turned off.
  3. Make sure the transmission is in Park, then without pressing the brake pedal, turn the ignition to ON.
  4. Connect the HDS, check the VIN, and enter the RO number to unlock the security command.
  5. Go to the A/T Data List and make sure the ATF Temperature reads between 104 ° F and 147° F
    • If the reading is between 104° F and 147° F, go to step 6.
    • If the reading is below 104° F, start the engine and warm up the ATF. Once the reading is within range, turn off the HDS, turn the ignition to OFF, and go back to step 3.
    • If the reading is above 147° F, Open the hood and cool down until the ATF temp is within range, Once the reading is within range, turn off the HDS, turn the ignition to off, and go back to step 4.
  1. From the A/T Data List short the SCS.
  2. Make sure the ignition is turned to ON and the transmission is in Park.

NOTE: As soon you press the brake pedal, you must complete the following steps within 60 seconds.

  1. Press down on the brake pedal and release it.
  2. Press down and release the accelerator pedal three times.
  3. Press down on the brake pedal, shift from Park to Neutral, then release the brake pedal.
  4. Press down and release the accelerator pedal three times.
  5. Press down on the brake pedal, shift from Neutral to Park, then release the brake pedal.
  6. Press down and release the accelerator pedal three times.
  7. Press down on the brake pedal and hold it.
  8. Make sure the Gear Position indicator has all of its segments showing.

NOTE: If all of the segments are not showing, you must exit the HDS, turn the ignition to OFF, and go back to step 3.

  1. Start the engine. After about 10 seconds the break-in procedure will automatically begin and the Gear Position indicator will start to blink.  This procedure takes about 4 minutes. During that time, engine fluctuation is normal.    If you release the brake pedal or press down on the accelerator pedal, the procedure will stop and you will need to start over at step 3.

  1. After the idle returns to normal, turn the ignition to OFF. If this is the first break-in procedure repeat steps 5 thru 16, if this is the second break-in procedure go to step 18.
  2. Make sure the break-in procedure is complete by checking the status on the following items on the Data List: Completed Clutch Lap Cycles count shows 2 times, and
    • Clutch Lap Completion Status shows Complete.

NOTE: If not complete return to step 5 and repeat the procedure.
