Next Unread Message View Message DATE: June 16, 2023 TO: All Honda Sales, Service & Parts Managers, and Personnel FROM: Brad Ortloff, Manager of Auto Campaigns and Recalls Re: Stop Sale/Safety Recall: 2018-2023 Multi-Model MOST Communication Error On June 15, 2023, American Honda notified NHTSA of a stop sale and safety recall for certain model year 2018-2023 Odyssey, 2019-2023 Passport, and 2019-2022 Pilot units due to a poor connection in the media oriented system transport (MOST) bus network. A poor MOST connection may affect audio sound quality and the rearview camera display may not function properly when the vehicle is in the reverse gear. An improperly functioning rearview camera may impair rearward visibility, potentially increasing the risk of a back-up collision or injury. Refer to your eResponsibility report or perform an iN VIN status inquiry to determine which units in your inventory are affected. Failure to repair a vehicle as necessary prior to sale may subject your dealership to claims or lawsuits. BACKGROUND A coaxial cable terminal was not manufactured to proper specifications. An improperly manufactured terminal may lead to poor communication in the MOST bus network which can potentially affect the quality of audio sound and/or potentially cause the rearview camera to work intermittently or go blank when the vehicle is in reverse gear. REPAIR Replace female terminal on affected harness and install a terminal straightening cover. PARTS Pilot units with Blue Ray feeders will be VIN controlled due to low volume and dealer ordering. All other models and trims will be available through the normal parts ordering system. TOOLS There are no special tools needed for this recall. FMVSS 1 : NR FMVSS 2 : NR Description of the Safety Risk : If the MOST communication is lost for more than 20 seconds, the rearview camera function will fail when the vehicle is in the reverse gear, increasing the risk of a crash or injury. Description of the Cause : The MOST communication coaxial cable was improperly designed and manufactured. Identification of Any Warning that can Occur : The audio system may exhibit popping or crackling sounds and/or the display audio screen may flicker. February 11, 2021 Honda began to utilize a waterproof coupler to address the connection issue and continued to monitor and analyze the market. April 25, 2022 Honda began to analyze recurring issues after the use of the waterproof couplers. April 19, 2023 Honda observed rearview cameras failed to display an image and investigated further. June 8, 2023 Honda determined that a defect related to motor vehicle safety and FMVSS noncompliance existed and decided to conduct a safety and noncompliance recall. As of June 8, 2023, Honda has received 273,870 warranty claims related to the issue between May 2017 to June 2023, and no reports of injuries or deaths related to this issue. Description of Remedy : Description of Remedy Program : Registered owners of all affected vehicles will be contacted by mail and asked to take their vehicle to an authorized Honda dealer. The dealer will install an improved MOST cable harness between the existing display audio and vehicle terminal connections and a straightening cover over the vehicle cable connector to properly connect the audio display unit. Owners who have paid to have these repairs completed at their own expense will be eligible for reimbursement, in accord with the recall reimbursement plan on file with NHTSA. How Remedy Component Differs from Recalled Component : Recalled components contain improperly designed and manufactured MOST coaxial cable terminals. Identify How/When Recall Condition was Corrected in Production : The MOST coaxial cable terminal has been improved by a redesigned part from a new component part supplier.
