1 Associated Investigation
Rear-View Camera Failure
NHTSA ID: PE22001
Dated opened: February 7, 2022
The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) has received 42 complaints and a number of Early Warning Reporting (EWR) Field Reports alleging failure of the Rear-View Camera (RVC) in 2017-2018 Model Year Honda Ridgeline vehicles. The complaints report severe damage to the tailgate wire harness requiring replacement of the harness. The damage to the wire harness is alleged to be caused by normal usage of the vehicle when opening and closing the tailgate. The damage to the wire harness severs the connection to the RVC causing it to fail to function as designed. Most of the complaints show the failure occurring just after the warranty mileage is exceeded.
Failure or malfunction of the RVC results in reduced visibility of the area behind the vehicle. This limited view may lead to an increased risk of a crash resulting in injury and/or property damage.
ODI is opening this Preliminary Evaluation (PE) to determine the scope and severity of the potential problem and to fully assess the potential safety-related issues.
The ODI reports cited above are available to review online at NHTSA.gov under ODI identification numbers:11440548, 11438172, 11428514, 11422394, 11420068, 11419669, 11415847, 11415248, 11413184, 11408414, 11404149, 11403368, 11403360, 11399178, 11398930, 11397936, 11397565, 11388328, 11374112, 11373525, 11372604, 11350026, 11343441, 11341373, 11329993, 11298458, 11443328, 11441551, 11437880, 11431246, 11422938, 11417394, 11400366, 11395026, 11363268, 11362758, 11362378, 11361959, 11350162, 11343035, 11319870, 11206191

Next Unread Message View Message DATE: November 23, 2022 TO: All Honda Sales, Service, & Parts Managers, and Personnel FROM: Brad Ortloff, Manager of Auto Campaigns and Recalls RE: Stop Sale/Safety Recall: 2017-2019 Ridgeline Tailgate Harness Today, November 23, 2022, American Honda is notifying NHTSA of a stop sale and safety recall for certain model years 2017-2019 Ridgeline units which may have damaged tailgate harness wires. This damage may cause the rearview camera to stop working properly, potentially increasing the risk of a back-up collision or injury. Refer to your eResponsibility report or perform an iN VIN status inquiry to determine which units in your inventory are affected. Failure to repair a vehicle as necessary prior to sale may subject your dealership to claims or lawsuits. BACKGROUND Due to improper manufacturing, the tailgate harness wires may become damaged over time with articulation of the tailgate. This damage may eventually lead to broken wires, potentially causing the rearview camera to work intermittently or go blank. REPAIR Replace the tailgate harness. PARTS Improved parts are available for ordering through your DPSM. Currently, the supply of parts is extremely limited. To assist with parts supply, we ask that dealers order for vehicles only with inoperative rearview cameras. This will help dealers to satisfy immediate customer needs while we continue to improve our parts supply situation. TOOLS There are no special tools required for this repair. SERVICE BULLETIN Service Bulletin 22-049, Safety Recall: 2017-19 Ridgeline Rearview Camera Inoperative Inspection is posted to the Service Information System (SIS) as of November 23, 2022. It includes repair, parts, and warranty information related to this recall. CUSTOMER NOTIFICATION American Honda expects to complete customer notification by mid-January 2023. This notification will ask customers to visit their dealer only if they are currently experiencing an inoperative rearview camera. Once parts supply normalizes, American Honda will re-notify customers who have not already had the remedy applied, directing them to visit their dealer for harness replacement. As always, be sure to perform an iN VIN status inquiry for all vehicles passing through your dealership to determine eligibility for any open campaigns. NHTSA Recall Number: 22V-867 Honda Campaign Number: KCK Service Bulletin Number: 22-049 AUTOMOBILE DIVISION American Honda Motor Co., Inc. 1919 Torrance Blvd., P.O. Box 2215 Torrance, CA 90509-9870 January 2023 Dear FIRSTNAME LASTNAME, This notice is sent to you in accordance with the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act. Honda has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain 2017-2019 model year Ridgeline vehicles. Why my vehicle is under recall: The rearview camera (RVC) tailgate wire harness can break after repeated opening and closing of the tailgate. A broken wire harness may cause a failure to display the RVC image, which may affect the driver’s view and increase the risk of a crash or injury. What Honda will do: Due to a limited supply of parts, at this time Honda only is repairing vehicles with an inoperable RVC. When more replacement parts become available, registered owners will be notified by mail and asked to take their vehicle to an authorized Honda dealer to have their vehicle repaired. Your Honda dealer will replace the RVC tailgate harness with an improved part for FREE. Honda estimates the repair will take approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes. However, your dealer can provide you with a better estimate of the overall time for this service visit, as it may be necessary to make your vehicle available for a longer period of time. What we need you to do: • Check recall information for your vehicle by accessing the Honda Recall Lookup tool at www.recalls.honda.com and entering your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). • If you have questions or concerns, we encourage you to: o contact your local Honda automobile dealer; or o email or chat by going to www.owners.honda.com/help/customer-relations; or o visit Twitter @HondaCustSvc; or o visit www.recalls.honda.com to use “Ask Dave”, our 24/7 virtual agent; or o call American Honda’s Customer Support & Campaign Center at 1-888-234-2138 Monday through Friday, 6:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Pacific Time. If you paid out of pocket to have these specific recall repairs performed on your vehicle, you may be eligible for reimbursement; please contact American Honda’s Customer Support & Campaign Center at 1-888-234-2138 to determine potential eligibility and for instructions on how to request reimbursement. If you no longer own this vehicle or if any of the information is not correct, please complete and return the enclosed prepaid Information Change Card as soon as possible. If you are a lessor of this vehicle, federal regulations require you to forward this notice to your lessee within ten days. If you believe that American Honda or the dealer has failed or is unable to remedy the defect in your vehicle, without charge and within a reasonable period of time (60 days from the date you first contact the dealer for a repair appointment), you may submit a complaint to the Administrator, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 1200 New Jersey Ave., SE, Washington, DC 20590. Alternatively, you may call the NHTSA toll-free Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to http://www.safercar.gov.
