Description of the basis for the determination of the recall population:

The recall population was determined based on supplier and manufacturing records.

 Description of how the vehicles being recalled differ from similar vehicles not included in the recall:

According to the tire defect notification 21T-001 filed by Continental Tire the Americas, LLC (CTA), a total of 3,093 potentially affected tires with the following tire identification numbers were applied to potentially affected vehicles:

Of the 3,093 potentially affected tires, supplier production records identified only seven tires potentially subject to over-curing. Based on tire identification numbers, shipping records narrowed these seven tires down to five shipping trailers. The vendor responsible for wheel assembly (wheel, tire, and TPMS) maintained records for the tire DOT code during receiving, and separately the TPMS ID number during assembly. These records indicate that the seven over-cured tires received from the supplier were limited to 20 lots of wheel assemblies that were shipped to Honda. Each wheel assembly lot is designated for 72 vehicles, so the overall scope is 1,440 vehicles. Using the TPMS ID numbers, Honda determined that these wheel assemblies were installed on 1,215 Honda Passport and Pilot vehicles, of which 1,093 were U.S. market vehicles. Supplier and vendor records also indicated that only 99 of these wheel assemblies match the suspect DOT tire identification number and mold number, so the tire replacement remedy will be limited to these 99 wheel assemblies.

Defect description:

According to defect notification 21T-001 filed by CTA, certain affected tires have an over-cure condition. Affected tires may experience a carcass break in the sidewall with sudden air loss or could develop a belt edge separation that could lead to a partial or full tread/belt loss. These conditions increase the risk of a crash or injury. The tires may exhibit visible localized tread wear that may manifest as excessive vibration and/or bulging in the tread area, which could serve as a possible warning to owners.

Chronology:

November 13, 2020

Based on tire defect notification 20T-018, Honda determined that a defect related to motor vehicle safety existed and decided to conduct a safety recall (NHTSA ID no. 20V-725).

February 15, 2021

The supplier submitted tire defect notification 21T-001 and notified Honda of additional suspect tires.

March 4, 2021

Honda determined that a defect related to motor vehicle safety existed and decided to expand the safety recall to include additional vehicles.

As of February 24, 2021, Honda has not received any warranty claims, field reports, nor reports of injuries or crashes related to this issue.

Program for remedying the defect:

Registered owners of all affected vehicles will be contacted by mail and asked to take their vehicle to an authorized Honda dealer. The dealer will inspect all four tires and replace tires with the affected DOT tire identification number and mold number for free. Owners who have paid to have these repairs completed at their own expense will be eligible for reimbursement, in accord with the recall reimbursement plan on file with NHTSA.

Statement by American Honda Regarding Tire Recall:
2019-2020 Honda Passport and Honda Pilot
• 1,093 vehicles are affected in the United States
• Vehicles will be inspected, and if a recalled tire is found, the tire will be

• No reported crashes or injuries related to this issue
TORRANCE, Calif. – March 18, 2021 – American Honda will voluntarily recall 1,093
Honda Passport and Pilot vehicles from the 2019-2020 model years in the United States
to inspect each vehicle’s tires to determine if it has been recalled by the manufacturer,
and if a recalled tire is found, replace it for free. No related crashes or injuries have
been reported in relation to this issue.
A total of seven tires were manufactured using an incorrect rubber curing
process, supplied to Honda and subsequently installed on certain 2019-2020 Honda
Passports and Pilots. The sidewalls on the affected tires may rupture unexpectedly,
resulting in reduced tire pressure or a belt edge separation, which could lead to
tread/belt loss. Either condition increases the risk of a crash or injury. Based on Honda
production records, 1,093 vehicles that potentially received one or more defective tires
must be inspected by an authorized Honda dealer to complete the recall on each
vehicle.
Honda is announcing this recall to encourage each owner of an affected vehicle
to take it to an authorized dealer as soon as they receive notification of this recall from
Honda. Mailed notification to owners will begin in late-April. 2021. Owners can also
determine if their specific vehicles are included in the recall by visiting
www.recalls.honda.com or by calling (888) 234-2138.

relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain 2019 – 2020 model year Passport and Pilot vehicles equipped with Continental
CrossContact LX Sport 245/50R20 102 H tires.
Why my vehicle is under recall: The tires may have been over cured and, as a result, may develop a break in the sidewall
causing a sudden loss of air or the tread may separate from the tire that could lead to
tread/belt loss. These conditions increase the risk of a crash or injury. The tires may show
tread wear that manifests as excessive vibration while driving and/or bulging in the tread
area, which can be considered a possible warning.
What Honda will do: Your Honda dealer will inspect all four tires and, if necessary, replace the tire(s) for FREE.
Honda estimates that the inspection process will take approximately 15 minutes. If the
tire(s) need replacement, the repair will take approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes to
complete. However, your dealer can provide you with a better estimate of the overall time
for this service visit, as it may be necessary to make your vehicle available for a longer
period of time.

On October 27, 2020, Continental Tire the Americas, LLC (CTA) formally notified NHTSA of a safety recall
related to certain improperly manufactured tires that may cause the sidewalls to crack, burst or lose
tread while driving, increasing the risk of a crash. As previously communicated, American Honda
notified NHTSA of a stop sale and safety recall on November 20, 2020 for 214 model year 2021 Pilot vehicles
that were potentially affected by this defect.
Upon further investigation, on February 15, 2021 CTA notified NHTSA of additional tires affected by this
same defect. On March 11, 2021, American Honda notified NHTSA of an expansion to this recall for 1,093
model year 2019-2020 Passport and 2019-2020 Pilot vehicles. Refer to your eResponsibility report or do an iN
VIN status inquiry to determine which vehicles in your inventory are affected by this range.
Please note that American Honda is only recalling vehicles that potentially were built with possibly
one or more of these affected tires. CTA is handling the replacement of any affermarket tires with this
defect separately and directly with dealers. Click here for information from CTA related to the handling
of affermarket tires, including the identification of customers and the submission of claims regarding
these parts.
Failure to repair a recalled vehicle as necessary prior to sale may subject your dealership to claims or
lawsuits.
BACKGROUND
Affected vehicles may be equipped with one or more tires that were cured for a time beyond the
specification limits. Over cured tires may develop a break in the sidewall resulting in sudden air loss or
a belt edge separation, which could lead to a tread/belt loss. Either condition can cause a loss of
vehicle control, increasing the risk of a crash or injury.
REPAIR
Tires will require an inspection and photograph claim submission to verify that they are affected, and
will be replaced as necessary.
PARTS
New replacement tires will be made available through your authorized Honda Tire Center (TireRack
Wholesale Solutions: 877-327-8473). American Honda expects only a small quantity of tires will be
affected by this recall.
