Fuel Tank May Overfill Into Charcoal Canister

A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source may increase the risk of fire.

Summary

Braun Corporation (Braun) is recalling certain 2018-2021 Braun-modified Honda Odyssey vehicles. The fuel tank assembly installed by Braun may be susceptible to the fuel tank overfilling into the charcoal canister. If the charcoal canister fills with a sufficient amount of fuel, fuel may leak out.

 

Remedy

Braun will notify owners, and dealers will inspect vehicles. If evidence of a fuel leak is present, a new fuel tank assembly and a new Honda charcoal canister will be installed, free of charge. The recall began February 22, 2021. Owners may contact Braun customer service at 1-800-488-0359.

This service bulletin details the inspection of the fuel system charcoal canister and replacement of the charcoal canister and fuel tank if required.

Fuel Tank and Charcoal Canister Inspection

DANGER

Avoid smoking, working with grinders and any other source of ignition when performing this procedure. Highly combustible fuels will be present and may cause serious bodily injury, death and/or property damage.

 

1. Open rear hatch and disconnect vehicle battery.

2. Remove rear hatch threshold cover. See Photo A.

3. Remove rear hatch floor covers. See Photo B.

4. Remove screws securing sending unit/charcoal canister cover. See Photos C and D.

5. Carefully lift sending unit/charcoal canister cover. Use care as the charcoal canister is secured to the underside of the cover. See Photo E.

6. Inspect top of fuel tank for evidence of leakage, particularly stains and damaged/cracked paint. See Photo F.

If there is no evidence of leakage, proceed to Step 7.

If there is evidence of leakage, perform steps 7 through 11 and proceed to Charcoal Canister and Fuel Tank Retrofit on page 5.

7. Disconnect evaporative vent shut off valve harness from charcoal canister. See Photo G.

8. Disconnect fuel tank vent hose. See Photo H.

9. Disconnect engine vent hose. See Photo I.

10. Disconnect Fuel Tank Pressure Sensor harness. See Photo J.

11. Remove charcoal canister/cover J assembly from vehicle.

12. Remove charcoal canister vent hose from charcoal canister. See Photo K.

13. Inspect charcoal canister vent hose for liquid. See Photo L.

If there is no liquid in the hose, proceed to Step 14.

If there is liquid in the hose proceed to Charcoal Canister and Fuel tank Retrofit on page 5.

14. Rotate the charcoal canister in every direction. Look for and listen for any liquid inside of the charcoal canister.

If there is no liquid inside the charcoal canister, no further action is required. Reinstall charcoal canister by performing instructions in reverse. Apply seam seal to sending unit/charcoal canister cover before securing to vehicle. Affix fuel fill information decal (part number 512546) next to fuel fill port as shown in Photo M. Clean decal area with rubbing alcohol to ensure proper adhesion.

If there is liquid inside the charcoal canister, proceed to Charcoal Canister and Fuel Tank Retrofit on page 5.

 

Fuel Tank and Charcoal Canister Retrofit

DANGER

Avoid smoking, working with grinders and any other source of ignition when performing this retrofit. Highly combustible fuels will be present and may cause serious bodily injury, death and/or property damage.

 

15. Disconnect sending unit harness. See Photos N.

16. Relieve fuel line pressure. Connect vehicle battery and start vehicle. Vehicle will run 15 to 20 seconds and stall. Vehicle will also show a fuel gauge malfunction indicator. Restart vehicle. Vehicle will run for 2 to 3 minutes and stall.

17. Disconnect vehicle battery.

18. Disconnect EVAP line and fuel line from top of sending unit. See Photo O.

Note: Be prepared to capture escaping gasoline when fuel line is disconnected.

19. Remove sending unit lock ring. Rotate lock ring counterclockwise. See Photo P.

20. Lift sending unit and disconnect vent line. See Photo Q.

21. Remove sending unit from fuel tank. Turning the sending unit counterclockwise will ease removal.

22. Remove fuel, by pumping or siphoning, using the sending unit mounting hole. See Photo R.

23. Disconnect fuel fill tube from fuel tank. See Photo S.

24. Place a fuel tank jack beneath the fuel tank. See Photo T.

25. Remove fuel tank straps. See Photos U and V.

Note: Fuel tank straps shown without fuel tank jack for clarity.

26. Lower and dispose of fuel tank.

27. Remove charcoal canister from cover. and remove charcoal canister vent hose. See Photos W and X.

28. Remove hose from fuel tank pressure sensor. See Photos Y and Z.

29. Install fuel tank (BraunAbility part number 511321) by performing steps 15 through 25 in reverse.

Note: Use new sending unit O-ring, included in kit (part number 505963), when installing the sending unit.

Note: Use worm clamp (part number 26400), included in kit, when connecting fill tube to the fuel tank.

Note: Use mounting hardware included in kit when installing tank straps:

(4) – 1/2-13 X 1” Hex Bolt – part number: 10037
(4) – 1/2” Flat Washer – part number: 10065
(4) – 1/2” Nut – part number: 15704

Torque fasteners to 75 ft•lbs.

Paint fasteners after installation.

30. Install fuel tank pressure sensor (part number 512494) and canister valve (part number 512493) onto charcoal canister (part number 512492). See Photos A1 through D1.

31. Install fuel tank pressure sensor hose and charcoal canister vent hose.

32. Install charcoal canister on charcoal canister/sending unit cover.

33. Install charcoal canister/sending unit cover by performing steps 7 through 11 in reverse.

34. Install hatch floor covers and rear hatch threshold cover.

35. Affix CARB decal (part number 511922) to fuel tank. See Photo E1.

36. Affix fuel fill information decal (part number 512546) next to fuel fill port as shown in Photo F1. Clean decal area with rubbing alcohol to ensure proper adhesion.

37. Connect vehicle battery.

This notice applies to your vehicle:

 

Dear Valued BraunAbility Owner:

 

This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act.

 

BraunAbility has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain Honda Odyssey Power lnfloor wheelchair accessible conversions manufactured from September 13, 2018, to December 3, 2020. Vehicles manufactured during this time are susceptible to the fuel tank overfilling into the charcoal canister. If the charcoal canister fills with a sufficient volume of fuel, fuel may seep onto adjacent components or onto the ground. The condition, if present, typically appears early in the vehicle life. The operator may notice a fuel odor and/or small amounts of fuel seeping from the charcoal canister and collecting on the ground. This condition may also cause the check engine light to illuminate. A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source may increase the risk of fire.

 

The remedy is to schedule an appointment with your local BraunAbility dealer for inspection and if necessary, repair. The inspection should take approximately 1-hour. You may call and schedule an appointment with a BraunAbility dealer for repair without charge starting on February 4, 2021.

 

If you had this remedy performed on your BraunAbility vehicle prior to receiving this letter, you may be eligible to receive reimbursement for the cost of the remedy. The remedy is to inspect the charcoal canister for signs of leakage. If leakage is detected the repair procedure should be followed. Refer to service bulletin 512469 for the complete inspection and repair procedure.
