Version 3
Safety Recall: 2002-06 CR-V Driver’s Power Window Switch (Only VINs that start with SHS)
Supersedes 20-122, dated February 26, 2021, See REVISION SUMMARY.
IMPORTANT: Confirm the vehicle’s VIN starts with SHS before proceeding with this service bulletin. This bulletin only applies to 2002–06 CR-Vs with VINs that start with SHS. Refer to Service Bulletin 11-057 for 2006 CR-Vs with VINs starting with JHL.
AFFECTED VEHICLES
Year | Model | Trim Level | VIN Range |
2002-06 | CR-V | ALL | Check the iN VIN status for eligibility. (VIN must start with SHS) |
REVISION SUMMARY
This service bulletin has been extensively changed; American Honda recommends you read this entire bulletin.
BACKGROUND
Under severe conditions, water or other liquid may enter the driver’s window and reach the power window master switch on the door panel. Liquid in the switch can damage the switch’s printed circuit board (PCB), causing the switch to fail. In rare cases, the damaged PCB creates a short circuit that overheats the switch connectors and melts them, leading to a possible fire.
All affected vehicles, even those previously repaired under S/B 12-067, must have the driver’s power window switch replaced under the current recall.
CUSTOMER NOTIFICATION
Owners of affected vehicles will be sent a notification of this campaign.
Do an iN VIN status inquiry to make sure the vehicle is shown as eligible.
Some vehicles affected by this campaign may be in your new or used vehicle inventory.
Failure to repair a vehicle subject to a recall or campaign may subject your dealership to claims or lawsuits from the customer or anyone else harmed as a result of such failure. To see if a vehicle in inventory is affected by this safety recall, do a VIN status inquiry before selling it.
CORRECTIVE ACTION
Remove the driver’s power window master switch and inspect the driver’s door wire harness connector. Based on your inspection, do one of the following:
- REPAIR PROCEDURE A: Replace the driver’s power window master switch.
- REPAIR PROCEDURE B: Replace the driver’s power window master switch and the driver’s door wire harness.
NOTE: REPAIR PROCEDURE B is rare; the replacement rate is about 1 percent.

- Push up on the bottom of the power window switch to release the clip and the hooks, then remove the switch.
- Inspect the power window switch and the driver’s door harness connector for any heat damage or melting.
- If there is no damage to the driver’s door harness connector, go to REPAIR PROCEDURE A.
- If there is any damage to the harness connector, go to REPAIR PROCEDURE B.
REPAIR PROCEDURE A

Statement by American Honda Regarding
Power Window Master Switch Recall: 2002-2006 Honda CR-V
- Approximately 268,000 vehicles are affected in the United States
- Power window master switches will be replaced, for free
- No reported injuries; 16 fires have been reported related to this issue
TORRANCE, Calif. – Dec. 15, 2020 – Honda will voluntarily recall approximately 268,000 model-year 2002-2006 CR-V vehicles in the United States to replace the power window master switch. Under certain conditions, rainwater or other spilled liquids may enter through an open driver’s window and enter the power window master switch on the driver’s door. Over time, exposure to water and other fluids can cause electrical resistance in the switch, which ultimately can cause the switch to overheat and melt, damaging the switch and potentially damaging an associated wire harness. Additionally, if a switch melts, it could produce smoke and potentially cause a fire, increasing the risk to motor vehicle safety.
Honda conducted a prior recall of the power window master switches in these vehicles beginning in Oct. 2012, calling for repair of the switch rather than replacement. The new recall, which supersedes the prior one, is in response to moisture-related failures of switches repaired under the previous action. No injuries have been reported related to this issue, but there have been 16 reported switch fires subsequent to earlier recall repairs.
Honda is announcing this recall to encourage each owner of an affected vehicle to take it to an authorized dealer as soon as they receive notification of this recall from Honda
. Mailed notification to owners will begin in late-Jan. 2021. Owners can also determine if their specific vehicles are included in the recall by visiting www.recalls.honda.com or by calling (888) 234-2138.

Defect description:
The recall remedy for NHTSA recall ID number 12V-486 of applying butyl tape to seal the power window master switch (PWMS) from moisture was insufficient. The butyl tape could separate from the PWMS if improperly applied. Under certain conditions, moisture may enter through an open driver’s window and reach the PWMS on the door. Over time, exposure to moisture can cause electrical resistance in the switch, which ultimately can cause the switch to overheat and melt, damaging the switch and potentially damaging an associated wire harness. Additionally, if a switch melts, it could produce smoke and increase the risk of a fire.
Chronology:
October 4, 2012
Honda submitted a defect information report for NHTSA recall ID number 12V-486.
May 2013 to December 2016
Honda launched an investigation after receiving reports of thermal events involving vehicles remedied under 12V-486. In these cases, it was determined the servicing dealer performed an improper recall repair or the customer accidently spilled liquid near the PWMS.
February 2017 to October 2017
Honda analyzed data from each of its global regions and learned that the thermal event occurrence rate was higher after the recall remedy was performed than before.
February 2018
The investigation was relaunched and failed parts were collected from the field for analysis.
September 2020
Re-creation tests confirmed improper butyl tape application during the recall repair could separate from the PWMS, exposing the PWMS to moisture entry.
December 3, 2020
Honda determined that a defect related to motor vehicle safety existed and decided to conduct a safety recall.
As of November 24, 2020, Honda has received 104 warranty claims (16 involving fire), 13 field reports (seven involving fire), and 87 reports of thermal events related to this issue.
Program for remedying the defect:
Registered owners of all affected vehicles will be contacted by mail and asked to take their vehicle to an authorized Honda dealer. The dealer will replace the PWMS with a redesigned unit that is not susceptible to moisture entry. The dealer also will inspect the associated wire harness for damage and replace if necessary. The inspection and repairs will be performed for free. Owners who have paid to have these repairs completed at their own expense will be eligible for reimbursement, in accord with the recall reimbursement plan on file with NHTSA.
The estimated date to start notification to dealers: December 11, 2020
The estimated date to start notifications to owners: January 18, 2021
Representative copies of all notices, bulletins and other communications:
A copy of the dealer service bulletin, the final customer notification letter, and other dealer communications will be submitted to your office as soon as possible.
A draft of the owner notification letter will be submitted to your office as soon as possible.

Re: Stop Sale/Safety Recall: 2002-2006 CR-V Driver’s Power Window Master Switch
On December 10, 2020, American Honda notified NHTSA of a stop sale and safety recall for certain
2002-2006 CR-V vehicles for improperly manufactured or previously repaired (under service bullen
12-067) driver’s power window master switches which may allow liquid to enter the door panel,
potentially causing a short and increasing the risk of fire. Refer to your eResponsibility report or do an iN
VIN status inquiry to determine which units in your inventory are affected.
Failure to repair a vehicle as necessary prior to sale may subject your dealership to claims or lawsuits.
BACKGROUND
Under certain conditions, spilled liquid or water entering the driver’s window may reach the power
window master switch on the door panel. If this occurs, the switch’s printed circuit board (PCB) could be
damaged causing the switch to fail. In rare cases, the damaged PCB may short circuit and overheat the
switch connector, potentially melting it and increasing the risk of a fire.
REPAIR
Replace the driver’s power window master switch and inspect the driver’s door wire harness connector
per the new instructions provided in service bulletin 20-122.
PARTS
Parts are available through normal ordering.
TOOLS
There are no special tools needed for this recall.
