SUMMARY:

Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain model year 2015 Acura MDX 2WD and MDX 4WD vehicles, 2016 Acura MDX 4WD vehicles, 2015-2016 Honda Odyssey vehicles, and 2016 Honda Pilot 2WD and 4WD vehicles.

The affected vehicles have fuel tanks that were manufactured with insufficient welds which may separate and allow fuel to leak out.

 

CONSEQUENCE:

A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source may result in a fire.

 

REMEDY:

Honda will notify owners, and dealers will replace the fuel tanks, free of charge.

Owners may contact Honda/Acura customer service at 1-888-234-2138.

The recall is expected to begin July 8, 2016.

Honda’s numbers for this recall are KA9 (Honda vehicles) and KB0 (Acura vehicles).

Safety Recall: 2015–16 MDX Fuel Tank

BACKGROUND

During vehicle assembly, some fuel tanks with improper welds were incorrectly included in parts stock. Clients may notice a fuel smell or a leak. A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source could result in a fire.

 

CLIENT NOTIFICATION

Owners of affected vehicles will be sent a notification of this campaign.

Do an iN VIN status inquiry to make sure the vehicle is shown as eligible.

Some vehicles affected by this campaign may be in your new or used vehicle inventory. Federal law requires that all affected new vehicles be repaired before sale.  In addition, failure to repair a vehicle subject to a recall or campaign may subject your dealership to claims or lawsuits from the client or anyone else harmed as a result of such failure. In addition, state law may provide American Honda with the right to seek indemnification in any such claim or lawsuit. To see if a vehicle in inventory is affected by this recall, do a VIN status inquiry before selling it.

 

CORRECTIVE ACTION

Replace the fuel tank.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

  1. Replace the fuel tank. Refer to service information.
  2. Write the fuel tank serial number on the RO, then give the warranty clerk the RO. For the warranty claim to be paid, the fuel tank serial number must be included in the DTC field of the warranty claim.
  3. For California residents only: Fill out a Vehicle Emissions Recall – Proof of Correction certificate, and use KB0 as the recall number. Give the certificate to your client, and advise him or her to keep it as proof that the product update was completed. Your client will need to submit this certificate to the DMV only if the DMV requests it. If you need more certificates, use reorder number Y0657.
