New ATF and Fluid Naming Convention

AFFECTED VEHICLES

All models with 9-speed automatic transmission

Honda’s 9-speed automatic transmission uses new technologies and shares very few components with our current 5- or 6-speed automatic transmissions. Because of this, it requires a specially formulated transmission fluid: ATF-Type 3.1.

This fluid includes performance additives that are specially formulated just for this transmission. It’s also not backward compatible with any other fluid, do don’t use it in other transmissions or driveline components.

And just so you know, this ATF follows a new fluid naming convention that’s intended to help make naming more logical and consistent. Here’s what it currently looks like:

ATF-Type 3.1

Keep in mind this new fluid naming convention is really a guideline. In the future, there may be slight variations in the acronyms. And, although we have no plans to backward apply this naming convention to any existing fluids at this time, we may do so later on.
