Summary
Honda (American Honda Motor Co) is recalling certain 2020-2022 GL1800 Gold Wing motorcycles equipped with manual transmissions. An ignition timing software error for the engine control unit (ECU) may reduce engine performance, which can result in an engine stall.
Remedy
Dealers will update the ECU software, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed July 28, 2022. Owners may contact American Honda Motor Co customer service at 1-866-784-1870.

Honda is launching a SAFETY RECALL on CERTAIN 2020 through 2022 GL1800/B vehicles to update the ECU for a potential defect that may result in engine stalling, increasing the risk of crash or injury.

DEALER INVENTORY
As of June 21, 2022, YOU MUST NOT SELL any affected NEW OR USED motorcycle in the AFFECTED UNIT section until it is repaired, according to this Service Bulletin.

November 2020
Honda received the first report of a stalling while riding issue from a vehicle in the Japan market.
January 2021
Honda received the first report of a vehicle randomly stalling while the clutch lever was pulled in for the US market. The vehicle was repaired under warranty by the dealer.
March 2021
Honda received the second report of a vehicle stalling while the clutch lever was pulled in for the US market.
The vehicle was repaired under warranty by the dealer.
May 2021
Honda began to investigate and analyze the issue by verifying the vehicle operation and occurrence circumstances.
July 2021
Honda received the third report, which involved six separate cases of vehicles stalling while the clutch lever was pulled in for the US market. One of the six vehicles was repaired under warranty by the dealer.
July – November 2021
Honda
continued to investigate and analyze the cause of the stalling issue.
March 2022
Honda received the fourth report of a vehicle stalling while the clutch lever was pulled in for the US market.
March – April 2022
After further investigating the issue, Honda was able to confirm the occurrences and found that the stalling condition was due to activation of the ignition retard control.
May 2022
Honda received the fifth report of a vehicle stalling while the clutch was pulled in for the US market.
June 3, 2022
Honda investigated the range of affected vehicles.
June 16, 2022
Honda determined that a defect related to motor vehicle safety existed and decided to conduct a safety recall.
As of June 16, 2022, Honda has received a total of seven (7) warranty claims in the U.S. market, three accounted for in the chronology, and four additional claims on 9/16/2020, 9/21/2020, 11/24/2020, and 12/10/2020. No crashes or injuries related to this issue were reported.

Honda has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain 2020-2022 model year GL1800 Gold Wing motorcycles. Why my vehicle is under recall: Due to improper engine control unit (ECU) software on manual transmission vehicles, the ignition timing control may delay the timing, resulting in reduced engine performance. Safety Consequence Reduced engine performance may cause the engine to stall, increasing the risk of a crash or injury. What Honda will do: Your Honda Powersports dealer will reprogram the ECU, for FREE. Honda estimates that the repair will take approximately 30 minutes to complete. However, your dealer can provide you with a better estimate of the overall time for this service visit, as it may be necessary to make your vehicle available for a longer period of time. What we need you to do: hedule an appointment to have California Owners Only The DMV will not renew your vehicle’s registration until this emissions recall has been completed. After completing the repair procedure, your dealer will give you a Vehicle Emission Recall – Proof of Correction certificate. Please make sure the dealer completes and provides you the certificate. January 2021 Honda received the first report of a vehicle randomly stalling while the clutch lever was pulled in for the US market. The vehicle was repaired under warranty by the dealer. The vehicle was repaired under warranty by the dealer. May 2021 Honda
began to investigate and analyze the issue by verifying the vehicle operation and occurrence circumstances. July 2021 Honda received the third report, which involved six separate cases of vehicles stalling while the clutch lever was pulled in for the US market. One of the six vehicles was repaired under warranty by the dealer. July – November 2021 Honda continued to investigate and analyze the cause of the stalling issue. March 2022 Honda received the fourth report of a vehicle stalling while the clutch lever was pulled in for the US market. March – April 2022 After further investigating the issue, Honda was able to confirm the occurrences and found that the stalling condition was due to activation of the ignition retard control. May 2022 Honda received the fifth report of a vehicle stalling while the clutch was pulled in for the US market. June 3, 2022 Honda investigated the range of affected vehicles. June 16, 2022 Honda determined that a defect related to motor vehicle safety existed and decided to conduct a safety recall. As of June 16, 2022, Honda has received a total of seven (7) warranty claims in the U.S. market, three accounted for in the chronology, and four additional claims on 9/16/2020, 9/21/2020, 11/24/2020, and 12/10/2020. No crashes or injuries related to this issue were reported. Description of Remedy : Description of Remedy Program : Registered owners of all affected vehicles will be contacted by mail and asked to take their vehicle to an authorized Honda dealer. The dealer will reprogram the ECU with an updated file containing the proper ignition timing control, for free. Owners who have paid to have these repairs completed at their own expense will be eligible for reimbursement, in accord with the recall reimbursement plan on file with NHTSA. How Remedy Component Differs from Recalled Component : Recalled components have the incorrect ignition timing control ECU program.
