Description of how the vehicles being recalled differ from similar vehicles not included in the recall: As a process quality improvement effort, the gear shift pedal arm’s shape has been redesigned and the weld of the gear shift pedal arm to the gear shift pedal boss has been extended by 10mm (from 25mm to 35mm). The improved part was used in mass production vehicles built starting on October 8, 2021. Identification of affected component: Component: Gear Shift Pedal Part No: 24701-K2E-T00 Country of Origin: Thailand Manufacturer: Thai Summit Gold Press Co., Ltd. 573.6(c)(3) Total number of potentially affected vehicles: 2,181 573.6(c)(4) Percentage of affected vehicles that contain the defect: 100% Make/Model Model Year Dates of Manufacture Number of Vehicles Honda Trail 125 (CT125A) 2021 08/26/2020 – 06/10/2021 2,181 573.6(c)(5) Defect description: Due to an inappropriate design of the gear shift pedal arm and insufficient weld strength between the gear shift boss and gear shift pedal arm, the weld may fail, and the gear shift pedal may potentially break off with repeated use, increasing the risk of a crash or injury. 573.6(c)(6) Chronology: February 21, 2021 A report was issued for the first occurrence in the Japanese market and an investigation ensued to identify if there were past occurrences which may have been related. Having found none, Honda decided to continue to monitor the issue in the market. May 28, 2021 After additional occurrences in the Japanese market, Honda initiated an investigation at the manufacturing plant to analyze the issue further. June 21, 2021 Parts returned from an occurrence were inspected and analyzed at the material level which indicated the gear shift pedal’s boss broke due to fatigue. July 6, 2021 Production parts were tested and analyzed in an effort to determine the cause of the issue. August 30, 2021 The tests and analysis of the production parts indicated that the weld point of the gear shift pedal arm to the gear shift pedal boss endures a high level of stress. September 29, 2021 Honda conducted further analysis to determine the likelihood of the issue and the potential population of affected vehicles. October 7, 2021 Honda determined that a defect related to motor vehicle safety existed and decided to conduct a safety recall. As of October 7, 2021, Honda has not received any warranty claims, field reports, nor reports of injuries, or crashes related to this issue for the US market. 573.6(c)(8)(i) Program for remedying the defect: Registered owners of all affected vehicles will be contacted by mail and asked to take their vehicle to a Honda Powersports dealer. The dealer will replace the gear shift pedal assembly, for free. Owners who have paid to have these repairs completed at their own expense will be eligible for reimbursement, in accord with the recall reimbursement plan on file with NHTSA. 573.6(c)(8)(ii) The date notifications were sent to dealers: October 14, 2021 The estimated date to start notifications to owners: November 15, 2021 573.6(c)(10) Representative copies of all notices, bulletins and other communications: A copy of the dealer service bulletin, the final customer notification letter, and other dealer communication will be submitted to your office as soon as possible. Use protective tape on the right side step bracket to prevent damage to the engine covers. Note: • This step is to allow clearance for the gearshift pedal removal. • It is not necessary to remove the flange bolts [2] for the cover pipe L/R Remove gearshift pedal hex bolt [4] and gearshift pedal [5]. Install new gearshift pedal [5] onto the gearshift spindle [6]. Note: • Make sure grooves on the gearshift spindle and gearshift pedal align. Install new gearshift pedal hex bolt [4]. Tighten new bolt to 7 lbf·ft (10 N·m) Install the four flange bolts [1] into the step bar [3]. Tighten the four bolts [1] to 16 lbf·ft (22 N·m). Final Check: Be sure the gearshift pedal is installed at the correct angle. 021 NHTSA Recall 21V-804 IMPORTANT SAFETY RECALL This notice applies to your vehicle: Dear Honda Powersports Customer: This notice is sent to you in accordance with the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act. WHAT IS THE REASON FOR THIS NOTICE? Honda has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain 2021 Trail 125 {CT125A} motorcycles. The gearshift pedal assembly may have insufficient weld strength and may fail. If the weld fails, the gearshift pedal may potentially break off with repeated use, increasing the risk of a crash or injury. WHAT WILL HONDA DO? The dealer will replace the gearshift pedal assembly with a new improved part, free of charge. WHAT SHOULD YOU DO? Please call any authorized Honda Powersports dealer and make an appointment to have the gearshift pedal assembly replaced, free of charge. Once you schedule an appointment for your motorcycle, be advised that the replacement process may take approximately 30 minutes. However, your dealer can provide you with a better estimate of the overall time for this service visit, as it may be necessary to make your motorcycle available for a longer period of time.
