Pinhole in Tire Sidewall / FMVSS 139

A slow air leak can affect tire performance, and increase the risk of a crash.

NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V768

Manufacturer Honda (American Honda Motor Co.)

Components TIRES

Potential Number of Units Affected 181

Summary

Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain 2022 Odyssey vehicles equipped with Bridgestone tires. The affected vehicles may have a tire that contains a pinhole, causing a slow air leak. As such, these tires fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 139, “New Pneumatic Radial Tires for Light Vehicles.”

Remedy

Dealers will inspect all four tires and replace the tire if a pinhole is found, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed November 24, 2021. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138. Honda’s number for this recall is HBL.

Notes

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.nhtsa.gov.

REVISION SUMMARY

This service bulletin was revised extensively, American Honda recommends you read this entire bulletin.

BACKGROUND
An electrical short occurred during the DOT label laser etching process, potentially causing the laser to burn a pinhole through the tire sidewall. Should the pinhole penetrate the tire’s inner liner, a slow air loss may occur. If left unaddressed, this slow leak could affect tire performance and, depending upon other circumstances, increase the risk of a crash.

CUSTOMER NOTIFICATION

Owners of affected vehicles will be sent a notification of this campaign.

Do an iN VIN status inquiry to make sure the vehicle is shown as eligible.

Some vehicles affected by this campaign may be in your new or used vehicle inventory.

Failure to repair a vehicle subject to a recall or campaign may subject your dealership to claims or lawsuits from the customer or anyone else harmed as a result of such failure. To see if a vehicle in inventory is affected by this safety recall, do a VIN status inquiry before selling it.

CORRECTIVE ACTION

Inspect the DOT date code number for pinholes on all 4 tires. Then, replace the tire(s) if needed.

PARTS INFORMATION

Part Name Part Number Quantity
Bridgestone Turanza EL440 Grand Touring A/S Tire 42751-BRI-126 1

INSPECTION PROCEDURE

  1. Locate and take photos of the complete DOT Code on all 4 tires.

NOTE:

  • Put a sticky-note below the 4-digit date code of each tire on the rim, and mark its location on the vehicle. For example: Left Front: LF, Left Rear: LR, Right Front: RF, Right Rear: RR.
  • Clear photos of the complete DOT code, including tire location and 4-digit Date Code as shown below, must be submitted for all four tires with the warranty claim.

Are the last 4 digits of the tire date code 2821?

YES —Go to Step 2 to inspect for a pinhole on all tires with date code 2821.

NO —No inspection is required.

  1. Inspect the area around the first digit of the date code, 2821. If the area around the first digit has a pinhole, the tire is impacted by this recall and the tire MUST BE REPLACED.

NOTE: An additional close-up photo clearly showing the date code, and its location on the vehicle must be taken and submitted to document the inspection results.

(Examples of pinholes that require tire replacement).

(Examples of tires that do NOT have a pinhole but may have minor blemishes or irregularities in the date code etching are OK and do NOT require replacement.)

Is a pinhole present on any of the tire date codes 2821?

YES — Go to REPAIR PROCEDURE to replace affected tire(s).

NO —No repair is required.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

  1. Replace any tire(s) that have a pinhole present on the tire with the DOT date code 2821.
  2. Send back the replaced tires to AHM WPI for destruction. Ship the tire(s) to this address:

American Honda – WPI
Building 500, Rollup Door #4
1919 Torrance Blvd.
Torrance, CA 90501

NOTE: Clear photos of the complete DOT CODE on all four tires taken in Step 1 of the Inspection Procedure along with the close-up photos of date code 2821 taken in Step 2 of the Inspection Procedure must be submitted with the warranty claim.

For Immediate Release

Statement by American Honda Regarding Tire Recall: 2022 Honda Odyssey

  • 181 vehicles are affected in the United States
  • Tires will be inspected for manufacturing damage, and if such damage is found, the tire will be replaced for free
  • No reported crashes or injuries related to this issue

TORRANCE, Calif. – Oct. 5, 2021 – In the United States, American Honda will voluntarily recall 181 Honda Odyssey vehicles from the 2022 model year to inspect each vehicle’s tires in order to determine if one or more were damaged during the tire manufacturing process. If a recalled tire is found to be damaged, it will be replaced for free. No related crashes or injuries have been reported in relation to this issue, which was discovered during quality checks at the tire manufacturer.

A total of seven tires supplied to Honda and subsequently installed on certain 2022 Honda Odysseys potentially were damaged by a laser used to inscribe DOT codes on sidewalls. The sidewalls on the affected tires may have a pinhole that could result in unexpected, reduced tire pressure. Low tire pressure could affect vehicle handling and increase the risk of a crash or injury. Based on Honda production records, 181 vehicles that potentially received one or more defective tires at the factory will be inspected by an authorized Honda dealer to complete the recall.

Honda is announcing this recall to encourage each owner of an affected vehicle to take it to an authorized dealer as soon as they receive notification of this recall from Honda. Mailed notification to owners will begin in mid-Nov. 2021. Owners can also

determine if their specific vehicles are included in the recall by visiting www.recalls.honda.com or by calling (888) 234-2138.

Description of the basis for the determination of the recall population:

The recall population was determined based on supplier and manufacturing records.

Description of how the vehicles being recalled differ from similar vehicles not included in the recall:

According to tire noncompliance notification 21T-012 filed by Bridgestone Americas Tire Operations, LLC (BATO), a total of 7,739 potentially affected tires with the following tire identification numbers were manufactured:

TIN Plant / Size Code TIN Type Code DOT Week

Of the 7,739 potentially affected tires, 6,064 were shipped to Honda and supplier production records confirm that only seven of these tires contain the defect. Six of the seven tires were identified by Honda prior to the retail distribution of vehicles equipped with the affected tires. The vendor responsible for wheel assembly (wheel, tire, and TPMS) maintained records for the tire DOT code during receiving, and separately the TPMS ID number during assembly. These records indicate that the remaining individual tire with pinhole damage was included in a single lot of wheel assemblies that were shipped to Honda. The wheel assembly lot is designated for 270 vehicles, of which 181 vehicles were distributed for retail before the tires were inspected for pinhole damage.
