Transmission may Unexpectedly Shift to Neutral

If the vehicle unexpectedly shifts to neutral, there is an increased risk of a crash.

Summary

Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain model year 2015 Acura TLX 2WD and 4WD vehicles.

In the affected vehicles, the transmission wire harness connections may have insufficient crimps, and, as a result, the transmission may unexpectedly shift to neutral.

Remedy

Acura has notified owners, and dealers will, based on the automatic transmission serial number, update the transmission software to prevent the transmission from shifting into neutral due to a faulty crimp, free of charge.

The recall began January 13, 2017.

Owners may contact Acura Client Relations at 1-888-234-2138.

Honda’s number for this recall is KC2.

Notes

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.

AFFECTED VEHICLES

Year Model Trim VIN Range
2015 TLX V6 with A/T Check the iN VIN status for eligibility

BACKGROUND

When the transmission control module (TCM, but it may also be referred to as a TCU) detects certain DTCs, the TCM  puts the transmission into a failsafe or backup mode. Currently, when the vehicle is put into backup mode, the transmission shifts to neutral and forward momentum may be lost. A software was developed to change the failsafe mode from a neutral state to a gear hold mode.

CLIENT NOTIFICATION

Owners of affected vehicles will be sent a notification of this campaign.

Do an iN VIN status inquiry to make sure the vehicle is shown as eligible.

Some vehicles affected by this campaign may be in your new or used vehicle inventory. Federal law requires that all affected new vehicles be repaired before sale. In addition, failure to repair a vehicle subject to a recall or campaign may subject your dealership to claims or lawsuits from the customer or anyone else harmed as a result of such failure.

Furthermore, state law may provide American Honda with the right to seek indemnification in any such claim or lawsuit. To see if a vehicle in inventory is affected by this recall, do a VIN status inquiry before selling it.

CORRECTIVE ACTION

Update the TCM software.

IMPORTANT SAFETY RECALL

This notice applies to your vehicle: 99999999999999999

Dear JOHN Q SAMPLE,

This notice is sent to you in accordance with the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act.

WHAT IS THE REASON FOR THIS NOTICE?

American Honda Motor Co., Inc. has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain 2015 model year Acura TLX vehicles equipped with a transmission wire harness and transmission supplied to Acura by ZF Transmission Gray Court (ZF). Acura’s decision to conduct this recall is based on ZF’s determination that, due to a manufacturing error, some transmission wire harnesses contained in transmission assemblies supplied to Acura may have been insufficiently crimped and could cause the transmission to malfunction. If this malfunction were to occur, it could result in an unexpected loss of motive power, which reduces vehicle control and increases the risk of a crash. Although not every vehicle may be impacted by this defect, it is not possible for you to detect if your vehicle is impacted through your driving experience or from a visual inspection. Please follow the instructions below to have the free remedy applied at your local dealer.

WHAT WILL ACURA DO?

The updated software needed to reprogram the transmission control unit will become available in December 2016. Acura will send you another letter when the updated software becomes available.

If you experience a loss of motive power, and it is determined to be directly related to this condition, please contact your local Acura dealer for a transmission assembly replacement.
