Product Update: PCM Update for Lock-Up Clutch Function
(Supersedes 09-053, dated July 27, 2011, to revise the information marked by the black bars)
REVISION SUMMARY
- Under VEHICLES AFFECTED, additional 2009 VINs and some 2010 VINs were added.
- Under SOFTWARE INFORMATION, a new version, program IDs, and P/Ns were added.
- Under CUSTOMER NOTIFICATION and Example of Customer Letters, information on the September 2010 notification was added.
BACKGROUND
A judder from the torque converter lock-up clutch may be felt while driving between 20–45 mph. To minimize the opportunity for the judder to occur, a software update for the transmission is available.
If the judder returns sometime in the future, after the transmission software is updated, the torque converter will need to be replaced.
NOTE: The first software update did not address all the transmission concerns. Customers whose vehicles were updated need to be notified to have their vehicles updated with Database Update 08-APR-2010 or later.

Not all vehicles within the affected VIN range have lock-up clutch judder. To verify vehicle eligibility, check for at least one of these items:
- The customer has a notification letter.
- The vehicle is shown as eligible on a VIN status inquiry.
In addition, check for a punch mark above the seventh character of the engine compartment VIN. A punch mark in that location means this product update has already been completed.
Some of the vehicles affected by this product update may be in your new or used vehicle inventory. These vehicles must be updated before they are sold or leased. To see if a vehicle is affected by this campaign, do a VIN status inquiry before selling it, leasing it, or returning it to a service customer.
Should an unrepaired vehicle that was in inventory, or that came in for service after this service bulletin was issued, cause an injury or property damage because of the campaigned item, the dealership will be solely responsible to the damaged party, and will be required to defend and indemnify American Honda for any resulting claims.
CUSTOMER NOTIFICATION
In May 2010, owners of 2007–08 and early 2009 Odysseys were sent a notification. Then, in September 2010, owners of late 2009 and some 2010 Odysseys were sent a notification. Examples of both customer notifications are at the end of this service bulletin.

Dear Odyssey Owner:
This letter is to notify you of a potential transmission problem with your vehicle and what you should do to resolve it.
What is the problem?
A transmission judder (vibration) may sometimes be felt while driving between 20-45 mph. To minimize the opportunity for judder to occur, a software update for the transmission is available. If you do not feel the transmission judder, the software may prevent it from occurring. If the transmission software is not updated, the transmission may become damaged.
What should you do?
Contact any authorized Honda dealer for an appointment to have your vehicle updated. The dealer will reprogram the automatic transmission software free of charge. Please plan to leave your vehicle at the dealer for half a day to allow some flexibility in scheduling.
What to do if you feel this notice is in error Our records show that you are the current owner or lessee of a 2009 or 2010 Odyssey involved in this product update. If this is not the case, or the name/ address information is not correct, please fill out and return the enclosed, postage-paid Information Change Card. We will then update our records.

i-HDS Diagnostic Software and J2534 Reprogramming Software
American Honda Motor Co., Inc. ("Honda") offers the i-HDS (Honda Diagnostic System) software suite for the diagnosis and repair of electronic systems on Honda and Acura automobiles, and for the reprogramming of electronic control units (including, but not limited to, ECMs and PCMs). This software provides access to all Honda and Acura vehicle systems (access to the immobilizer security system requires a Security Professional level software subscription and Vehicle Security Professional [VSP] registration with NASTF). To use the i-HDS software, you need to purchase one of our convenient subscription options. In addition, you will need a pass-thru Vehicle Communication Device (VCI) that is compliant with SAE J2534-1 and J2534-2 in order to communicate with the vehicle
Vehicle Communication Interfaces (VCI)
The i-HDS software supports the use of a generic pass-thru VCI that is compliant with SAE J2534-1 and J2534-2. However, Honda recommends the Denso DST-i or the Bosch MVCI for use on Honda and Acura vehicles, as Honda has worked closely with these manufacturers to ensure their hardware and our software interact safely and within the J2534-1 and -2 specifications, for both diagnostics and reprogramming. If you choose to use a generic VCI, please carefully consider the customer and technical support options you will receive from your chosen device supplier. Honda does not provide technical or customer support for generic VCI devices.
The VCI Application Table below lists devices that either are approved and supported by Honda or are known to have completed and passed an independent, exhaustive validation program with our i-HDS software suite.

Reprogramming with the J2534 Rewrite Application in i-HDS
Included in the i-HDS software suite is a new reprogramming application called J2534 Rewrite. This application is made available to all subscribers of the i-HDS software suite and replaces the previous generation software, J2534 Honda Pass-thru Reprogramming Software.
This new application is compatible with generic VCIs that comply with SAE J2534. It must be used to reprogram any Honda/Acura vehicle equipped with ECUs that support reprogramming. Refer to the table below for legacy applicability for the programming of ECMs and PCMs. Though system dependent, late-model vehicles may be equipped with other ECUs that support reprogramming as well, e.g. ABS or VSA. J2534 Rewrite must be used to reprogram these control modules, as instructed in an applicable service bulletin.
As shown in this table, not all legacy Honda/Acura models are equipped with a reprogrammable ECM/PCM. Furthermore, all 2007 and later models not listed in the table are fully supported with this application.
